Going back to the workforce after two years of not working

I need some advice here. I have been out of work due to needing a work visa to work and starting a family and I am now actively searching for job to get me back after getting my employment authorization. I have had prior International experiences in the industry and I plan to get into public accounting. The two years gap has been an issue and is always picked at when I have a conversation with recruiters. Most times I just basically say that I started a family and had some family commitments and mention that I obtained my CPA license during the period , volunteered and have been attending CPA to update my knowledge of changes in the industry. Does my story sound convincing enough? For those that have been on the other side of the table, is that convincing enough? It’s being tough and I haven’t made any progress even with my license and the busy season. I live in a major city in IN with a lot of public accounting firms and never envisaged it will be this hard. Has any one gone through this? Any advice will be appreciated. Thank you all.
