Hey guys, so I recently graduated and am currently studying for my CPA exam and recruiting. After about 1.5 years of looking for a job, I finally got an offer at a good firm where I’ll be an intern for 12 weeks then hired on full time.

    1. What do I bring on day 1? Do you guys have a bag or a briefcase or someting like that? Something like this https://blogs.uww.edu/internships/files/2012/11/100890_1_1.jpeg

    2. What are some good shoes you guys wear that are comfortable? I hate wearing nicer formal shoes because they are not comfortable after a while

    3. What are some tips for me as an intern?

    4. What are some thing I shouldn’t or should do?

    5. How proactive should I be?

Basically, I get along well with others and am ready to work hard to impress. Now, I don’t want to come off like I know too much or I’m some smarty pants intern trying too hard to impress. But I really want to show my superiors they made the right choice by picking me.

    1. Doesn't matter too much.. any messenger bag is fine. Just don't walk into a client meeting sporting a Jansport.

    2. Get any of those “dress” shoes that are the slip on style.. very comfortable.

    3. Take good notes. Carry around a pad. Ask questions.

    4. Pay close attention when the senior/exp assoc. is teaching you how to do something. Learn from mistakes. Do not make the same mistake twice.

    5. Be proactive as much as you can..

1.) Whatever they tell you to bring. I wouldn't spend any money on a case or a bag until you have to – at my firm they gave everyone a bag for transporting work equipment on the first day so it would've been a complete waste of money to buy a bag or case I just thought I had to have before my start date.

2.) As the previous poster suggested, loafers are good. I've got a couple pairs and they're easy to discreetly take off/slip back on when I'm at my cube at the office, but would obviously not do so while at a client. Aside from that there's not much you can do besides shop around for what's most comfortable for you, though rubber soled dress shoes will probably work for your purposes while giving you more comfort.

3.) Don't let yourself become overwhelmed by your assignments. The learning curve for new hires/interns is steep and your supervisors know this. Just be willing to accept feedback and make an effort to improve the quality of your work.

4.) Do – Ask questions. Don't – Keep asking the same questions.

5.) Be as proactive as you possibly can – if you need something to do don't be afraid to ask. At the rate you'll bill as an intern, there will ALWAYS be something to do.

    1. Most important thing to bring is actually two forms of I.D. and a voided check for the direct deposit. I had a bag with water and some snacks too.

2.I got some $30 dollar leather shoes from Walmart and they're pretty comfortable and have lasted quite a while. I don't expect they'll be sending you to do inventory every day (lol), so you'll probably be sitting a lot rather than walking.

    3. Intern, full-time, contractor it's the same advise-ask questions when you're not sure about something. There are no stupid questions. But do your quick research before asking, after a few days.

    4. You should NOT be late and it's better to dress up than down. Avoid being involved in office gossip and I would advise you take the first week to learn people's personalities, ask questions and speak less about yourself.

    5. Your trainer will give you assignments. If you see something wrong or get done quickly, be very proactive in asking for more work or mentioning something that appeared wrong. Otherwise, don't try to change the company on your first day lol.

    All the best!
