Any advice on how to improve your writing skills for the written communication section of the BEC exam? Other than writing posts on another71.com forum :).

I'd like to hear some suggestions too. I am a horrible writer. When I took BEC, my answers were literally 4 sentences. My intro restated the question, the conclusion summarized my answer, and 2 body sentences.

They are looking first to see that you answered the question posed. If you get the pass on that then the grade is based on your spelling, grammar, sentence and paragraph structure. A good memo/email will have an introductory paragraph where you restate the question then give a high level answer. The second paragraph gives support for why your answer is the correct answer. The third paragraph is the conclusion. Don't forget to start the memo/email with Dear So-and-So or address it to the person or company mentioned in the scenario. Also, don't forget to include a proper closing such as Sincerely, or Regards, then leave a couple of blank spaces and your name. The point of the written communication is to demonstrate that you can write effectively. If you only give them four sentences, you aren't giving them much to grade.

Most accountants I know are blunt and straight to the point…at least I am in my emails. But you have to “fluff” the written communication up. Imagine that it is your new potential boss asking the question and answer it like an interview question. That may help.

Do we get a spell check or grammar check button in real exam? Just wondering It would be like Word tab where you can format it and check the spellings..

I dont know what review course you are using, but Gleim does an awesome job in preparing you for the written communication part. They have about 60 sim exercises covering varied topics even from FAR,AUD,REG etc and you self evaluate on given parameters and so you learn where you can improve. I havent used any other review course, so I dont know if other courses have the same features.

    FAR : 71, 83
    AUD : 73,88
    BEC : 87
    REG : sweet 82 and DONE !!
