Got a 74 on FAR, time to re-group

I stumbled on this forum very recently, but I want to thank everyone for the support and encouragement and thanks to Jeff for providing a venue!

Ok, I got a score of 74 on FAR back Friday. I’ve given it time to sink in, and now it’s time to game plan a strategy for getting this one over with. I had already scheduled AUD for late May, so I just re-applied and hope to reschedule FAR for April 22. I have the Yaeger review course (with Wiley texts/ testbank). I work full-tme in a corporate setting, am married, and have a wonderful one-year-old daughter. Consequently, I don’t have time to watch all the (52 hours) video lecture again. Having never seen Gov’t, NFP, or IFRS until studying for this exam, I know those are areas I need to focus on. I will plan to review the video for those sections. I haven’t seen a score report yet (I’m not sure where you get them), but maybe that will give me some guidance as to where to focus. Beyond that, can anybody recommend a way to stay fresh on the topics I did well on and to add some knowledge in the areas I needed improvement? Focus on MCQ? Re-write notes? I need an organized strategy to execute between now and then that will put me in a stronger position. Thanks in advance for your help!

I would focus on working tons of mcq's and review the lectures on the areas you aren't comfortable with.

You may want to consider supplementing with the Ninja notes. These are great to be able to read every few days to keep everything fresh. Good luck!!

Here are a free sample of the ninja notes:

I would say a minimum of six weeks and a maximum of nine weeks for FAR. It really depends on your daily schedule. You didn't mention which review course you are using but for me in no way could I have listened to all 10 Becker lectures, worked their 1400+MC's(twice),all SIMS(twice), and memorized all the mnemonics and listings in four weeks. Four months is way too long.

I work a full-time job and managed to study at least three hours each day. I didn't keep up with my total hours but I did have a schedule (on a dry erase board) for each chapter and what I needed to cover for each. Such as listen to lecture, work MC, work SIMS, read chapter. I used Becker Final Review and used the same process for it as well.

You should really consider purchasing the NINJA audio and NINJA notes for FAR as well. On my LAST FAR exam, there was a full-blown SIM from one page in the NINJA notes. Or you could purchase your own voice recorder and record note cards, formulas, etc. Repetition is the key to passing these exams and utilizing various study techniques will enhance your success on the exam.

Hope this helps and good luck!

Woops,my post was in response to CPAjourney about study time for FAR:)

Anyway, you sound like you have a good plan based upon your time limits. Good idea to listen to those lectures you are struggling with.

Work MC's until you puke, clean it up, and do more. On my last FAR exam and am pretty sure I did all of the Govt, NFP MC's at least six times.

You so close and will get it in April!

    Best wishes!

I got a 74 on FAR in November. My suggestion is to review everything. Don't just review for 1 more point because you could end up like me and get a completely different mix of topics on your second attempt. Had I only reviewed to get that 1 more point I would have failed again. Obviously spend more time on the topics you're weaker on, but don't leave anything out of your review.

I'm sort of repeating the information already said. But I feel like a champion when it comes to scoring just shy of a passing score.

You really can't rush through it. You don't need one more point, you need at least 75 more points.

I'll suggest the way I restudied after my FAR 74 this was my 6 week plan.

(If you have the cash, get the Roger or Yaeger CRAM).

If that's not an option you need to rewatch the 50+ hours of video. I know it's a lot, but you need to pass this time so you aren't doing this a 3rd time. Do you know how to watch the Yaeger videos and change the playback speed? Do that, watch them at 1.3 or 1.5 and just follow along with your notes from last time. But add little tidbits that weren't written the first time. Do that in two weeks. Rewrite your new and improved notes, as you rewrite a chapter do all of the assigned homework for that chapter. (this took me 2 or 3 weeks). Save the last week or two to get in the Wiley TB and work the problems, in there. I think I worked over 1,100 questions (MCQ and SIMS) in addition to the homework from the book, and some extra review questions from CPA for free. You should work so many problems you want to throw your computer out of the window. Keep a separate notebook as you work through problems to write Fact Nuggets ONLY. Just a one or two sentence statement that summarizes the concept that is being asked in the MCQs. Write a fact nugget for every question you guess on, get wrong, or wouldn't be able to explain the answer to on your own. Carry that notebook with you and read it throughout the day at work, on your lunch breaks, in line for anything, all of the time.

Get the NINJA audio and listen to it nonstop. You should have it on repeat until your little one year old recognizes Jeff's voice and starts calling him Uncle Ninja, lol. (I listened to audio in the car all of the time.) I would also read a chapter of ninja notes and reread my notes at night in bed. But usually only the topics I was struggling with.

Good luck! You can do this!

yaeger users: Is there an assignment sheet included somewhere. I see the recomended mc's in the book, but I don't see an assignment sheet. I printed the handout. If there is not an assignment sheet, am I simply doing the mc's for topics covered in each module?

if you got a 74, you're doing exactly what you have to do to pass this exam. Don't change anything. Sometimes the CPA exam is a crap shoot. They even throw out like 15 MCs. One or two MCs is the difference between you passing and not. So don't go out all and change your mind set. You're right there. I wouldnt be surprised if you retook it and got a 85. Just keep doing what you been doing. And the best thing about your situation is that the material is still in your head. So its not like all that time you spent studying is wasted at all. Good luck(even tho I kno you dont need it).
