I applied for an accountant/controller job and was offered the position before I left the office. It was stressed that this is not simply a clerk/data input position, but truly a construction controllership position. It’s taken me a while to land a meaningful position, but finally – here it is!

    Thanks everyone!

The employer (owner) shared with me why my resume rose to the top – so I thought I would share the reasons with you. First, he was surprised at how many out of state resumes he received and being a local contractor, I think he wanted to hire local. Second, he, his previous controller and company CPA decided on key words they were looking for (i.e., construction experience) and some resumes didn't even mention construction experience – so they were tossed immediately. Interestingly, if your cover letter didn't include the *exact* name of the position (but instead referenced just accountant or just controller rather than accountant/controller), you may have made the cut but he wasn't impressed. During the interview he asked questions such as “do you know what a schedule of values” is as well as other construction accounting related questions. It was okay if I couldn't say yes to ALL questions – but I don't think he would have offered the position to me if I couldn't say yes to most of them. Finally, it didn't hurt to find out he's dealt with my husband's company on a professional basis and his aunt is married to the guy who owns the last construction company I worked for.

Thanks again for all the congrats!
