Headaches

Ever since starting my journey to my CPA license I’ve started getting extremely bad headaches. I’ve never been one to have many in my life either. Not sure if it’s from constantly staring at my computer screen doing multiple choice questions or what, but any time I sit very long studying they come about, especially at night. Anyone experience this?

Yes, there was another thread about this a few weeks ago. I get chronic migraines, especially from stress. Not so bad that I can't function but enough to make my day pretty miserable. I have been so stressed over the last month that I've gone through about 10 maxalt pills (prescription migraine medicine) and sometimes those are even ineffective. I got a mouthguard from my dentist last year that really helps with clenching my jaw at night. Headaches really are awful.

I couldn't decide if it was truly from stress or not. They're terrible though and make studying very difficult. I feel like I try to take so many breaks now that I'm becoming very inefficient with my time.

Does advil or anything like that help them? Any over the counter painkillers are totally ineffective at making mine go away. Without a prescription migraine medication, I'm totally helpless and they last for like 2-3 days at a time

I get them too, especially during a marathon weekend. I normally take some Tylenol before my exam but I didn't with REG. Big mistake! Especially since I studied for about 5 hours before taking it. Most horrible testing experience of my life.

    To amanda and jrd56202:

Before you decide to take any medication in attempt to make your headaches or migrant to go away, you should find out if you really need it.

Although painkiller can save you from time to time, eating too much will make you addicted to it. Plus, in long term, after your body get use to it, it would work anymore.

Painkiller generally only works if you 1) have trouble falling a sleep or 2) slept but feels more tire after waking up.

If lack of sleep or bad sleeping quality lead to your headaches, then painkiller 30-45 min before you sleep will help.

However, if your head is hurting because you study too much or look at the computer too much, pain killer won't help.

Instead, you should change your study plan.

I know it's very common for people to SIT really long to study questions, however, sit really long doesn't mean you study your best. Instead, please do some other thing in between study to help you BETTER REMEMBER the stuff you read. According to my sister, the best study interval is one hour (and the overall study period is 6 weeks only). If you are doing MC question and notice your rate of getting correct answer is decreasing, it's time to take a break!

Try to change your plan to: 30 MCQ -> Bathroom -> 30 MCQ –> Go to kitchen get water -> 30 MCQ –> Look for snack.

This will keep your head from hurting and your memory will increase significantly.

After 3-4 hours, or 200 question, consider going out for a walk. (To get coffee or shop for food).

This will help you study well, do exercise and stay slim! (I ate lots of junk food while studying)

I go to a neurologist for my headaches- trust me, i've tried every other option. You're right though, you can get rebound headaches from too much medication and also, migraine medication tends to decrease in it's effects if you take it too frequently. I don't like depending on medication but that's really the option for the kind of headaches I get.

You also need to be careful about damaging your liver when taking OTC pain medications such as Tylenol. Seek medical attention. Let your doctor know what is going on in your life and what you think the root cause of your headaches may be, and he/she may be able to provide strategies to cope.

You also may want to consider having your eyes examined if frequent headaches are a problem! Last summer I was having horrible headaches, which I just blamed on FAR. Turns out, I needed glasses and the headaches were a symptom of eye fatigue! Once I started wearing glasses at the office and for study, my headaches decreased by 70%. Grinding your teeth or clenching your jaw is also something that causes headaches. I found myself doing both during long study sessions and my bite guard helped tremendously!

I've always had good eyesight, but that could definitely be part of the problem. I couldn't tell you the last time my eyes were examined. If they doing cease I may get them checked out.

When the exam started stressing me out I started getting chest pains really bad. I went to my Dr and he determined it was stress related acid reflux. Which I have never had in my life I've generally been very healthy. He gave me some pills and it quickly went away. I also experienced a headache that continued for a week. That eventually went away on its own. Bottom line is stress can do crazy things to ur body that can even culminate to physical pain. I'd see a Dr though just in case cause u never know.

Yes. Stress can do crazy things to you. That's why, if you are really stress, please change your study plan.

You can make your study path fun…while getting progress…

I've suffered from headaches/migraines since I was 16. I tried everything and ended up with a couple of prescriptions. Recently, I've discovered Petadolex (butterburr extract). I'm not a naturalist by any means, but the combo of prescriptions/advil/aleve was not good for me. Honestly, this stuff works. It's a little on the expensive side, but it does the trick for sure!

I've had the worst headaches over the past week. Plus, I've had at least one canker sore almost every day for the last 3 weeks. I don't think I'm very good at handling stress haha

Oh man I've been getting those too. I thought it might be herpes but hopefully it's just stress. I had headaches too and heartburn.

I'm a HUGE advocate for chiropractic care. Many headaches are neck/stress related, a regular adjustment will help everything flow properly in your system. There are some nuts out there, in general, the nutier the better.

As mentioned above, eyes can be a major contributor, as can hydration levels, and last but not least is nutrition. Any sort of pain is caused by something being out of balance, your body is talking to you, be sure to listen!
