Hi, I applied the job as an accountant with department of traffic and highway in my area. I received an email that they would like to interview, but I need to schedule the time on the website for the test.

I am quite not sure if there will be an exam or just an interview on that day. It looks like they have different times for you to choose. Is this just the screening test or what should i expect on that day ? Any advice would be appreciated.

I think this varies a lot from county to county – I've heard both situations, where the test is simply a test and 20 minutes later you leave, or where the test is followed by an interview. If you have a reason you need to know how long you'll be there (for example, you're taking time off from a current job and need to know when to let your boss know you'll be back to work), then I'd give them a call and ask, but otherwise just go in prepared for an interview but realizing it may just be a test. I'd be more inclined to “just a test”, but have no way to know for sure.

I work for the state, and my interview was a test followed by a 20 minute panel interview. My wife applied for a city job, and it was just a test, with the highest scores invited back for interviews. I would show up prepared for a full interview, just in case.

My test was a written test that required me to write letters to taxpayers/accountants explaining a given scenario. No real technical skill was required, it was more to get a feel for your customer service skills. The one my wife took for a city job (it was for the DMV) was mostly math and reading/writing skills, again nothing technical. Your mileage may vary, however.
