How to approach recruiters for job search, desperation vs. interest

    Hello fellow71 people,

I check this forum everyday and I know several kind and smart people roam these forums. Please hear my story.

I have worked all throughout college and have participated in few extracurriculars (VSA, UVSA, and Undergrad Accounting Society). I was pre-law starting UCSD and by my third year, I realized I did not want law school or even had the grades (3.1 overall) for law school. I pursued a business route where I finally decided to do accounting at the beginning of my fourth year. I finished my minor in accounting in 5 quarters, where it was usually takes 7 quarters to complete (3.35 accounting). I’ve attended Meet The Firms for the first time in my 4th year and I was totally overwhelmed (and came out with nothing since I had no experience accounting wise and my networking skills were nil). I networked for the entire year, going to meetings and events from the accounting society (got a tax internship at a small firm and networked my way into risk management one in the summer). I thought I finally got my break when my boss’s good friend was a senior manager at EY and she gave my resume to her partner, who forwarded it back to the recruiter in SD.

I continued this correspondence with the SD recruiter and even spoke to other EY professionals in SD. I reached out to a senior who brought me to lunch. One of the managers even offered me a call for advice. Today was the day the invitations came out. No interview. I emailed the recruiter though I really lost all hope. I feel dumb and regretful but moping is for the weak and I already wasted enough time doing nothing these past two months while waiting for Meet The Firms.

    Overall GPA: 3.14/ Accounting: 3.35/ Law&Society: 3.32

Personality-wise: I really think I come off as friendly (at least I try to, according to the people I’ve met for the first time) and when I make my resume public on Careerbuilder, monster, and indeed, I occasionally get replies, even more (during the summer) than I thought but lately (fall) not so much.

Right now, I’m just looking for a start in public accounting for audit. If tax (I’ve done individual, corp, partnerships returns) was offered to me, fine, I’ll take it but I feel that audit will get me to more places. I’ve started out to apply to several firms in Orange County and if there are any recruiters lurking in these forums, please help a fellow another71 out. I’ve roamed the Zotlink for UCI (borrowed my friend’s log-in) and have at least 10 potential places I want to apply to by emailing the recruiter.

My question is this, how do I stand out from that ONE email? Should I go for broke and even email the partner (even though I heard from various accounts that it’s a controversial move)? Also, cover letter, do people REALLY read it? I just want a job right now so I don’t have to see my mom’s broken expression everytime she sees me at home doing nothing. Any advice would help.
