How do I get my foot in the door?

    Hey everyone,

I’m currently halfway done with my MS in Accounting at St. John’s (graduate winter 2015) and have had trouble obtaining any sort of accounting experience and did not have any luck during OCR. I have a 3.66 GPA and have been in banking for about 4 years now. Even my auditing professor said it did not make any sense on how I was passed over (never even received invite for first round interview). Regardless, I want to leave banking and delve into some sort of accounting/tax experience. I usually go on Google and look up “CPA NYC LLP” and then proceed to contact the recruiters of various mid-size and regional firms to see if there are any opportunities but I mostly get responses which say to wait for OCR. Any guidance or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

I would just keep on it. I am graduating today so I'm a year in front of you. Last year I had a hard time getting any type of internship, but I just kept applying and eventually got in at a small CPA firm in January. This was only for tax-season, but was able to gain some experience. Then I passed FAR over the summer before recruiting season. I was able to gain employment which I will begin in January. I just kept applying and kept getting rejected. I still only received 3 offers this year and none from a BigFour firm.

Keep at it. You still might find something during tax season. Some firms are just now realizing they are understaffed and are still hiring. If you still don't get anything just keep applying, and stay in touch with the Career Center at your school and any professors. Try to get a CPA part under your belt before next years recruiting season. This helped me tremendously.

    Good Luck

Thanks for your advice! I'm going to keep sending out emails and hopefully find something that will allow me to work during tax season. My main concern comes from leaving my banking job to work during tax season and then risking not being able to find steady work after April.

Networking is truly the best thing you can do, for me personally, networking + being Russian helped me get two internships.

I failed OCR and didn't get any 2nd round. But after I directly applied online and experienced the whole process of interviews, I got an offer from a Big 4.

So what will happen, no one knows. But an attitude of keeping moving is very important.

Also, you will graduate next winter so you will still have the OCR opportunities. It is a good resource. You should know what when wrong in the last one and make yourself a better candidate.
