How do you tell the partners in your firm you failed?

Hi so I just received my AUD grade back and I felt really good coming out of the exam to learn this morning I got a 59. My firm let me leave early for Becker class, days off etc… I am pretty sure that this will look bad on my yearly review, and possibly get me cuz they want me to pass. How do I tell them I failed? My orginal thought was to say I got a 72 or 73 which to means I knew the material just not as well as I thought.

    Any opinions on this?

BEC: Need to pass, lost creedit.
FAR: Need to pass. MY MOUNT EVEREST
Reg: Need to pass, lost creedit.
AUD:  Need to pass, lost creedit.

BEC: 75 lost credit, could not pass far 🙁
AUD: 76 lost credit could not pass far 🙁
FAR: 74, FML. Next exam 06/14/23
REG: 75 lost credit could not pass far 🙁

I don't think you need to bring it up to them. If they bring it up to you, just be vague and say your were close to passing, but didn't. And for your next section, don't let anyone know when you are testing. That way, you don't feel any added pressure when you get your score. Keep your head up!

In my opinion, you don't have too much to gain from fudging the numbers. Think of the cost vs benefit. The benefit is that you're still disclosing that you failed. The cost is that if they somehow catch you lying, they could fire you or at least not trust you anymore. (Think IT: Did you check your score at work? If the partners want to see anything that you've done on your work computer, I think it's relatively easy to do and I'm pretty sure it's perfectly legal too. In reality, they probably don't care enough to corroborate something like that, but just a thought.

I personally don't think you need to tell anyone the number, but if you feel compelled to disclose it, own it. Don't lie. It's just silly to lie.

Anywho, your partners should remember how difficult the exam is, and if they don't, then you probably don't want to work there, anyway.

#1 This is just my personal opinion, but I think it will be weird if you walk into someone's office to make an unsolicited confession about your failure on the CPA exam.

#2 Given how I feel about unsolicited confessions, you should just keep your mouth shut and keep at it. If anyone asks, you say, “Unfortunately, I have a couple of retakes in my future. But I passed BEC, so that's good. Just gotta keep at it.”

If this awkward conversation continues (which it won't, because most people want to end uncomfortable conversations about failure ASAP), and they say, “Oh no, what happened?” (But seriously… this isn't your mom, so this should not happen), then you say, “I guess I didn't have as great a grasp on the material as I thought I did.”

If they ask I would just say that you failed and don't give them a grade. When I got my 74 in AUD my boss let me take off the three days before the exam to do nothing but study. When I failed after being given that it really sucked. The only thing you can do is pick yourself up and hit the books even harder for next time. Keep an eye out for your score report to see what you didn't do well on and concentrate a lot of your effort on those areas while giving some times to the areas you did well on.

It's not that big of a deal. I've told partners that I failed an exam. I'd bet my bottom dollar that your partners failed an exam or two in their time as well. Mine did (they were quick to admit as much and offer up a war story or two when I told them about my failure).

Most managers or partners will be more concerned about your response to failure, than to the actual failure itself. At least the effective ones.

My opinion is that you are expected to fail, which is why it is such a big deal when we pass. I wouldn't tell them anything unless they ask.

I don't think anyone expects someone taking the exam to fail. Most people want you to succeed. If you go into an exam expecting to fail, there is a good chance you will fail. You should always go into an exam with a positive mindset.

Simply put, you don't. Until they ask.

I wouldn't say anything. If they ask about the actual score, man up and tell them. If they give you any grief then sit them down and let them take a 30 question quiz in Wiley or whatever online test bank you are using. Chances are they will fail it in a beautiful and colossal fashion. They won't ask about the actual score again.

You don't, unless asked directly. If they do ask, be honest and tell them that you didn't pass. Don't disclose the score unless asked specifically. The least amount you say, the better…just don't lie!

I wasn't talking about being positive or negative. I was talking about the fact that, statistically, a person is more likely to fail the CPA exam than pass. It is the norm for someone to fail at least one part of the exam at least one time. Chances are, the partners had to the one part of the exam more than once.

Part of what makes you desirable as an employee is your determination and attitude; your failures don't define you. Be careful if you decide to fib about your score – employers in certain states may be able to check your scores for each attempt. And getting caught in a lie, big or small, will say something about your character and ethical values!

Plus tons of people score much lower than expected and come back from it strong! Sometimes life gets in the way.
