How easily can you switch groups/practices once you join BIG 4?

I am in touch with one of the Big 4s and it looks promising that I will land an interview. However, it’s in healthcare consulting (which is what I do now), and might be my best way to get into this Big 4 firm. I have never been an accountant, but am finishing up the CPA. I want to use my healthcare consulting experience and cross-over to accounting/finance.

What have peoples experiences been at Big 4s with switching practices and/or offices?

I would be travelling for the consulting gig, so the office is not that big of a deal. I have every intention of utilizing my CPA even though I am an experienced candidate.

Is this a good plan – move into Strategy & Ops and then completely move into consulting in accounting/finance? Will they even allow it? Is it like interviewing for a new job when you try to switch practices?

depends on a lot of things… your performance up until the point you request the transfer, if there is any need in the group you want to switch to, if the seniors/managers/partners want to take you on in their group cause the more people there are, the less money for the partners. you should be fine though, just work really hard no matter what. make good impressions and dont make enemies with anyone. try to network with the people who you know are in the group you want to switch to. dont make it too obvious you want to switch into their group right away cause than they may get an idea that your trying to use them in a negative way, but just try to be friends with them.

ive been an intern at a big 4 for a couple months and switched from audit to advisory after the summer. i got great reviews from the seniors i worked with in audit and also did a rotation towards the end of the summer with the advisory team i wanted to work with. all of this played a factor into helping me get a FT offer in advisory once i complete my masters. at my firm, the HR i report to whenever i have questions is extremely helpful for situations like this, so if you are close with HR reps at your firm, you can ask them for advice

@OP, just saw your other thread.

Look, if you're not willing to take a large pay cut then forget about it. Auditing is a completely different field with different learned skills. You'd have to at least start at a second year level at a minimum.

Not to discourage, but as an FYI more than anything.
