I’m a first time poster but have thoroughly lurked another71.com for the past year and a half while studying for my exams. This forum was a great source of motivation and tips for studying and I wanted to share what my own study tips for those still in the process. Don’t give up, you can do it! I scored in the mid 80s for FAR (88), REG (66, 83), and AUD (86) and 75 for BEC (phew).
Forewarning: This will be a long post but I hope it helps someone out there!
I’m a visual learner and I like to write a lot to learn. This is what worked for me using Becker, WTB, Ninja Notes, & Ninja Audio:
During my weeks of studying, I read the Ninja Notes through once, and then rewrote the notes about 2-3 times before taking the test. Rewriting the notes hammered in the overall concepts for me and also reminded me of which areas I was weak in. Reading wasn’t enough because it just allowed me to gloss over things without really understanding. I also listened to the Ninja audio during my long commuting but only in the last two weeks.
Depending on how many chapters there were for the section I was working on, I aimed to spend about a week (or less) on each chapter though real life came up and I often took longer than a week for longer chapters.
This included reading the entire chapter concentrating on areas that Becker has highlighted or circled. I skipped the video lectures because I felt that they were just going over the same material that I could read much more quickly. I took notes while studying for FAR but afterwards felt like it had been a waste of time. I remembered & learned more from doing MCQ.
Once I was done reading, I knocked out all the MCQ for the chapter concentrating on learning from my wrong answers. For AUD/BEC, I didn’t write down my wrong answers. But for FAR/REG I wrote down why I got those questions wrong since they were more complex or required formulas to get correct. This takes a lot longer but I thought it helped me learn better.
I tried to finish all of the questions in one go for each section so I wouldn’t have to redo questions like Becker suggests to complete the homework. I left the ones I got wrong for my final two weeks of review.
For FAR, I also supplemented with WTB for MCQ. WTB has a much better system than Becker IMO on letting you only do questions you’ve gotten incorrect and showing you the progress in each sction. Sections I had less than 75% in, I redid until I raised it between 75-80%.
Final Review:
1) Redo all the MCQ I got wrong the first time, and write down the reasons why I got them wrong again. I also looked back at the textbook if I really felt like I didn’t understand the concept. I sometimes retyped these notes after I finished all the chapters again just to get it down pat. I’m not very good at memorizing so I also wrote down mneumonics that I found came up a lot for questions I got wrong.
2) Attempt all the sims. Although you get random ones on the exam and you have the AL, doing the sims helped me identify weak areas because if I didn’t understand them, I would get it completely wrong. But this in turn helped me learn the concept.
3) Do the final exams and see how I’m scoring. If below 70s, I went back and did more MCQ. But I think if I scored 70 or above, I passed the exam. (Becker final exams were always more difficult than the actual exam I felt)
4) Rock the exam!
