How long does it take you to get to work and back home from work? In minutes and miles? I am applying for jobs and trying to figure out if its worth traveling 50+ miles to and from work everyday.

I'm spoiled…. 15-20 minute one way drive when there is no traffic, full 30 minutes with traffic. I used to work with someone who lived in mountains and drove an hour each way to and from. She got used to it. But now she doesnt commute, and LOVES having a 5 minute drive. I guess if the job is worth it. Everyone is different.

Door to door (desk) takes me 40 minutes. It's 30 miles. I would never go longer than that unless it was for an amazing job opportunity that was absolutely perfect for me.

Regular commute is about 12 min to corp. office (around 8 miles) one-way.

Can't complain as this being simply incomparable in contrast to previous dig in WA state, with horrible commute and heaven forbid, during the rarely snowfall events with roads paralyzed since folks in WA are used to rain not snow and drive like crazy at any sight of white fluff!

Current short commute though comes with a price as housing closer to downtown and even groceries at such location is about 20% more than in suburbs.

Mine is about 35 minutes, 25 miles. It took some getting used to but I do not mind it any more. I live in the “sticks” aka way out in the country and work in the nearby city. A big perk for me of a longer commute is the ability to truly separate work and home life.

The longest it has taken me to get to work was an hour during a “snow storm” where people forgot how to drive!

I live 27 miles from work, but due to the horrible traffic it takes me an hour to get there. Going home is about the same, unless there is a wreck then it's around 1.5 hours…which happens 1-2 times a week. On a positive note, I have converted the 2 hours per day in the car into 2 extra hours of STUDY time thanks to Ninja Audio! 🙂 I love my job (seriously) and I would never consider finding someplace closer to home! I work very hard for our firm, and for that I am extremely well compensated and have a great work environment…so if the money is right and you are happy with the offer then don't let the drive keep you from a great opportunity!!!

I used to live much closer to my job, but a few years ago I met a handsome engineer who just happens to live 27 miles from my office… 😉

3 miles, about 15 minutes. I used to drive 45 miles each way and once I started disliking my job those 45 miles became the dreaded miles of hell!

Takes me 6 minutes to get to work. So many jobs/opportunities in Boston but I refuse to make the commute. I love living so close to my job.

18 miles each way… about 30-40 minutes from door to my desk depending on traffic. On a good day it will only take about 25. However for the most part I spend at least 1 hour in my car each day. Thats enough for about 4 chapters of NINJA audio BTW.

4.7 miles, 35 minutes and I thought I had it good.

However I think we can all tell you different commute times and if its worth it or not. In the end if the job is horrible the commute doesn't matter. If the job is perfect for you it matters less. I don't think there is a cut and dry answer if the commute is worth it.

This is my 2nd attempt at the exam, I had two parts passed (failed many) and I stupidly quit, big mistake. Now I'm back and with a vengeance!

I would never ever ever commit to a long commute. I hate traffic and I don't really love driving. It takes me 15 minutes to get to work via mass transit. 5 ish miles, I think. But I used to live in Norfolk, VA and my husband drove 50ish miles one way to Williamsburg 4 days a week for a job he loved. Some people can do it. I'm not one.

    REG - passed (expires 5/13)
    AUD - passed
    FAR - passed
    BEC - passed 4/17

I live 18 miles from work. Takes me anywhere from 35 (absolutely no traffic) to an hour. Typically 45 minutes. Unfortunately, I live just south of Boston but work just west of Boston. I'm hoping to move closer when my lease is up. Wooo!

3.8 Miles, 45 minutes (25 minutes for walking, waiting and express bus time, 20 minutes walking for last 0.9 miles)

I work in San Francisco. If my office was closer to Market Street, I would have a much shorter commute. The bus time is not that long, it's the walk to the office. I enjoy the walk, it's very invigorating in the morning!

In the evening, I catch a bus only 0.5 miles from my office, but since it's not an express bus, it still takes 45 minutes of travel time to get home.

After reading these replies 50+ mile drive sounds crazy for work, but at the same time if it takes about a hour to get there and hour back, it doesn't sound that bad.

Its crazy how some it takes 45 mins when your only few miles away from work, I think that would drive me nuts.

It's all relative to what you can tolerate and what you're used to. I grew up and went to college in a small town where everything was in biking/walking distance, so I could bike to work in 15 minutes. 5 min in a car. When I moved to Arizona (a city) I had to adjust; my commute was about 10-15 minutes and 5ish miles (lots of traffic lights) but my daughter's school was right near my house, so it didn't add any time to my morning commute. Then when I moved to California, I had to adjust all over again because the drive to my daughter's school is about 10-15 minutes (3ish miles), and then it's another 15-20 min (8 miles) from there to work, so it makes my morning commute routine about half an hour. I am very thankful that I don't have to get on an interstate to get to work. I will stick with my traffic lights and scenic route. Until I can wrangle my way into a work-at-home job.
