I am just curious, around what age do you start having to deal with age discrimination when applying for jobs? Also, is it just older people dealing with age discrimination, or can younger people face discrimination because they are “too young”?

July 21, 2014 at 3:27 am #583095Kls238MemberSadly, yes to both. I think businesses generally do comply with the EEOC laws, but I do feel many employers have a vision of their ideal candidate. If they get two candidates with almost identical qualifications, I think they're bound to discriminate by choosing the candidate that matched their vision. I don't think it's always malicious, but I think it happens.

July 21, 2014 at 8:28 am #583096John TuckerMemberWell, depends on the position. If you are over 50 and applying to a Top Executive or Management position, no one is going to look at you and think you are “too old”. But if you are over 50 and applying to an entry level position or a position that's just above entry level, they might prefer a 20 something or early 30 something so that they can get a solid 10-20 years out of that individual and get a decent return on the training that they had to invest.
So you should always have a Career Plan and be progressing forward in your career, if you do that you should always have the experience and education to apply for positions that are right in line with your current age. If you decided to goof off in life and get started “late,” then you might have some issues. On the flip side of that, if you are kicking tail out here and progressing very fast, being an early 30-something applying for the Top Executive position might make people look twice, but if you are really “killing it” you will get that position eventually if not now, then in the next 3-7 years.

Not that it's preventing me from getting jobs but I feel like people don't take me as seriously because I'm young. I've had people come out and ask me how young I am, which is not really something that you would ask most people, and people have also asked me when I plan on having kids. It's frustrating because I feel like I'm more competent that some of the people in my department but because I'm 10 years younger than the next youngest person, I have to overcompensate.
July 21, 2014 at 12:28 pm #583098fuzyfro89ParticipantStinks, but it happens.
I think the biggest concern is what level position you are applying for and what age/level most other candidates are. If the difference is just a few (perceived) years… let's call it +/- 5, they probably won't know the difference. But, you don't want to stand out as far older/younger than the others.
I don't think I would be too shocked with a candidate for Controller at age 50, but maybe a senior analyst at the same age could be perceived as having no additional potential, no drive to work hard, and who knows what else.
Maybe part of it is just unfamiliarity, so they assume the worst?
July 21, 2014 at 1:42 pm #583099ScarletKnightCPAParticipantI have felt it. I am near 30 but have a baby face so people think I am a fresh college graduate. I copensate by dressing up extra. Since I look younger people just assume that I have less experience even though they've seen my resume and should know how much experience I have and approximate my age.

July 21, 2014 at 3:20 pm #583100Valerie_JoMemberLegally speaking (at least in Wisconsin), the protected group starts at age 40. There are currently no laws protecting younger people against discrimination, which I don't particularly understand, but that's the way it is.

I asked her for her number, and she was like dude you're old. I'm like WTF! She was in her mid 40's she said she needed someone younger. LOL!

They were like “are you serious Skynet?.” Kricket was like “I don't go out with old guys”. I was like “I'm only in my early 30's” Mints then said “Sorry Hon, but we're only looking for 18-20 year olds college guys.”
I was like “Damn, that's a Bummer.”

July 23, 2014 at 11:43 am #583105mla1169ParticipantLOL I think Amanda meant peers asking if she was planning on having kids, not during an interview. And yes, coworkers ask some pretty damn nosy questions but that's not illegal just annoying.

July 23, 2014 at 11:58 pm #583106nicole2035Memberfor CPA firms especially big 4, it's be at 27+ well, depending on the generation you are apart of. If you are over 28, you are no longer who they primarily hire. I think they said big 4's have 80% of their employees in the age of 22-27.
In Industry, it should be standard, which is like 40% but that'll of course vary city to city, company to company.
July 24, 2014 at 12:11 am #583107AnonymousInactiveWhat do you mean by in industry it should be standard?
July 29, 2014 at 2:07 am #583108AnonymousInactiveAnyone want to assess the validity of this statement?
“Almost two-thirds of respondents said millennials tend to demonstrate a lack of research preparation for interviews. These hiring managers also said they were three times as likely to hire a worker over age 50 as a millennial.”
