How the Hell Does BEC Have the Highest Pass Rate?

I was just curious how the BEC section of the exam has the highest pass rate? Six percent might not seem like a lot, but on a test like the CPA, it’s significant. In addition, it’s 12% higher, than the other parts of the exam.

Is this test a luck of the draw? I’m actually good at testing, but my god, this was the worst examination I have ever taken. I’ve passed the other sections on the first attempt essentially (I didn’t really try a few years ago and got two 69s). I’ve typically got 70s+ on my first attempt at the Becker HW, yet this section was insane. Hopefully, i’m not disclosing too much, but it felt like I was in a calculus class on the second testlet. I ended up guessing on like 5-10 questions. I likely could have solved them, but they would have easily taken me 10+ minutes each.

At lest the first testlet felt super easy. The last testlet didn’t feel too bad either. I’m hoping there were some difficult questions though because I noticed some of the tricks they tried to confuse people with.

B=84 This exam was such a b**** that I thought I failed-don't know how these things work
A=76 Slacker I am, I'll happily take it
    R=81 I LOVE taxes
F=80 I don't wanna get banned for an expletive I'm thinking with "yea" proceeding it

In my opinion, BEC high pass rate is probably larger due to lack of Sims. The 15% WC is probably free points for most people. You really only need a 60-70% from MC to pass.

How does the computer even score those essays?

I used as many of the words from the essay prompt as I could. Basically my format was:

    Dear CFO/Controller/Manager,

The purpose of this memorandum is to… re-vomit prompt.
    Bla bla bla
Thank you for wasting my time with: re-vomit prompt in shorter way.

Please DO hesitate to call me if you're too stupid to understand what I have written

I sat for BEC today and it was brutal. I don't understand, this is my 4th time sitting for this section! My scores are as follows: 67, 66, 72….I pray to god my brain knew better than. I did and answered enough to pass with a 75. Some of the questions were asked in a way that Becker, Ninja, Roger, Wiley..not one of them prepared me for. If I pass then I just have REG left. If I fail I'm pretty much gong to lose my mind.

    AUD - 83
    BEC - 79
    FAR - 76
    REG - 75

    AUD - 72,85 expires 12/31/15 yikes
    FAR - 72,68,76!!!!
    REG - 72, NOV 2015
    BEC - 67,66,10/24/2015

I dont think BEC is easy for anyone. Around 90% of all test takers have their lowest score in BEC.

This is the one exam I was dreading the most and it's lived up to the hype so far. Studying for it makes me feel so stupid and I can't get anything over a 60 on most Ninja quizzes I take. I'm taking it in 2 weeks and don't feel good about my chances at all. Finding out I failed AUD earlier this week hasn't helped my confidence and the thought of failing 2 exams this window gives me anxiety. I've been studying so hard since I started this process and I feel like I'm letting my wife and son down by failing.

Re2pect, you have failed one test and only by 2 points. You have already passed the “hardest” exam. Don't be so hard on yourself. BEC isn't getting any easier for me either but I have finally found a study pattern that seems to be working better. You can still pass BEC on the 10th and have three weeks to go over your weak points in AUD which is probably SIMS because that seems to be the case with everybody. I know that it's easier said than done, but try to stay positive.

Thanks perezc3910. I don't handle failure well and am always hard on myself in the event that I do. My wife has sacrificed a lot and has supported me these past couple years with me going back to school and now with all the studying. I'm trying to get this all over with as soon as possible so our lives can go back to normal and I can make more time to be with my son.

You're right about the sims getting me for AUD. I scored stronger on mcq and I'll have to put some extra work into them for the retake. Hopefully these new DRS sims aren't too crazy and the Ninja and Roger updates are good practice for them. What is your study pattern that's helping you for BEC?

Here is my theory… Since the material for BEC is generally looked at as being the easiest, I think that the exam isn't curved nearly as heavily as say FAR or REG. This can be devastating for the people who do better with calculations and struggle with conceptual (all over the place) material. This means you will have to work twice as hard because the curve isn't there to help you out. I could be completely wrong, but I backup my theory by saying that I knew the BEC material really really really well and didn't get an amazing score. While with REG and AUD, I didn't feel nearly as confident, but ended up with similar scores.

    REG - 81
    BEC - 83
    AUD - 86
    FAR - 78 (Done!)

Well I was originally using the lecture videos for each chapter and I have cut that out completely. I wake up at 5am and read the chapter (or at least try to). I am not the best at staying focused. I continue to read during my lunch and listen to the audio as much as I can throughout the day. I get home from work around 7 so I eat quickly and copy the Ninja notes for whatever section corresponds to what I have been studying throughout the day. I am trying to get 2 chapters per week done since I feel that the first three weeks of studying have been a total waste. On weekends I will do MCQ for the two chapters. Since this weekend includes a holiday and i'm off, I plan to focus more on writing the Ninja notes and doing MCQ.

Actually the exam was easy, it was the only one i walked out knowing i passed. Though i will admit studying for it was very difficult but Im actually suprised that the pass rate is only around 55% should be alot higher.

    AUD-79 First attempt.

Personally, I highly recommend the strategy of quickly going through the material during your first review. All the of the exams are very dense so I think it is best not to linger too long on one topic because that is only giving your brain time to forget something you already learned.

    REG - 81
    BEC - 83
    AUD - 86
    FAR - 78 (Done!)

I don't think people are necessarily performing better on BEC. I think they just allow a higher passing rate for BEC (yes, I believe the AICPA manipulates passing rates). Aside from the cost accounting, BEC is not really an accounting exam. It's a finance/econ/IT exam. And it would foster a lot of bad feelings if people were passing the accounting sections but failing to get their licenses because they couldn't pass the non-accounting section. So they draw the line in the sand a bit lower for BEC.

BEC was the first exam I took and I failed it twice in a row before moving to REG. In hindsight AUD was the hardest exam but BEC was right behind it. It is such a random exam with many unrelated topics.

BEC's material is boring and tough but tests are not that hard. Also if you're decent in writing you should be able to score good points in WC.

The questions i got in the exams were much easier compared to Becker Material, however COSO stuff was hard.

FAR May 2012 81 (lost credit, didn't sit for other sections.)
    FAR 86 Aug 2015
    AUD 85 Nov 2015
    BEC 84 Dec 2015
    REG 78 Mar 2016

Passed ALL sections in first attempt!!

I wouldn't use the word “easy” to describe any of them. I will perhaps say that it was “less brutal” than FAR, which is the only other test I've taken. But yeah…BEC was SOOOOOO boring, and that was the challenge for me. The WC was a total gimmie, but I did struggle with IT a bit.

    FAR - PASS
    BEC - PASS
    REG - PASS
    AUD - PASS

    Done and licensed!
