How to deal with diminishing returns?

I’ve been studying like a desperate crazy lady for my FAR retake the past few weeks. I’ve taken copious notes, recopied them, listened to Ninja audio daily, prepared topic outlines, used flashcards, read my Wiley text cover to cover twice, and beaten the test bank to death. I can’t take another FAR fail. I refuse to be beaten again!!!

Prior to the past 48 hours, I’ve been averaging 80-85% on 30 MCQs sets on all topics. However, the past 2 days I can’t seem to break a 70%…which is making me completely and totally hysterical days before my exam. The more MCQs I pound, the worse the scores, the worse my anxiety becomes.

A rational person would conclude that I need to step back from the MCQs but when I try to stop for more than an hour I feel even more anxiety because I’m NOT studying. Then I go back into study mode and bomb more questions and get even more upset. I’m going in a circle and it’s making me crazy!

    Help!!!!

    REG: 75 DONE 🙂

I find if MC aren't going well, I'll stop and do something else.

Just recopy the notes on the sections that you are having trouble with. Or Re read a section.

    Or go for a walk.

I know going into FAR I felt overwhelmed at the amount of material we have to know.

    Just stay positive.

    FAR - 83
    AUD - 73 92
    BEC - 83
    REG - 88

    Mints, you got this.

It seems to me that if you’ve been scoring in the 80s consistently, then you must know the material well. Scoring in the 70s now is the result of burning out and anxiety, and there’s only one cure to that, which is to say “hell with it” and take a break. Guilt and anxiety are your worst enemies right now, so crush them. If you are taking the exam on the 6th, then you have time to take a full night off and review after.

Go out with friends and have some fun, just don’t stay at home watching TV/reading a book etc. as a way of taking a break, because presumably it’s your study environment, so it will be haunting you (at least that’s my experience).

Once you recharge, you will be ready to kill FAR!

@MintsRGood I wish you Good Luck for FAR ! You have probably given a tough fight with materials and outdone most of it. You Inspire many people on this forum(including me).

Close your eyes and think of topics that might come in Exam and you would think I wish I had read this more and go back to it.Take a nap/exercise as it would take away some anxiety/stress.

Keep doing short MCQ practice tests. Do the AICPA released MCQ's.

I know you have got this and go and beat FAR hard.

I wish I can study as hard as you, I have short attention span and waste lot of time here and there.I am preparing for AUD and I wish to give my bestest.

    All the Best !!!!

FAR- 79 -->Becker self study, Final review & Flashcards
REG -72-->Becker ,76-->Becker plus Wiley test bank
    AUD- 73 Becker,72-->Becker+Wiley,69-->Added ninja notes,89 --> Added Gleim review
BEC- 84 Becker plus Wiley Test bank

    I am Done !!!!

Thanks everyone, I appreciate the feedback!!! A night away from the test bank may help right my ship…I just feel so guilty not using it when I'm at home and not eating, showering, or sleeping! 😉

I'm under enormous pressure at work and at home to pass FAR on the 6th and close out which is compounding my normal exam stress by 10,000. Over the holidays I had to deal with a few first class morons telling me all the reasons why I should just move on to something else, I can't cut it, I'm wasting my time, blah blah blah and my personal favorite…that I “choked” with a 74 on my last section. Let me tell you, it was all I could do to keep from thanking that person for the suggestion and subsequently strangling them with the Christmas tree garland!!! 😉

    Thanks again!!!!!!! 🙂

I have spent most of my time lately doing multiple choice and after about four hours its torture. Last night I started doing Sims to break it up and I found it kind of refreshing. I know a lot of people pass these exams without doing them, but I think I will work on them for at least an hour a day to break up the routine.

I spoke to an ancient wise man who sent me on a mushroom induced journey through an ancient forest to find the key to passing the CPA exam. A talking spider monkey told me to throw the last of my drinking water in the dirt to find what I was looking for. So I followed his instructions and the following message appeared in the soil:

"Do 5000 multiple choice questions for each section"

I'm surprised to hear of some of the feedback you got in RL. You've passed 3 parts already and were right there on your last attempt at FAR. That shows you've got this.

I think the other posts about stepping away for a bit is good advice. I had the same anxiety when I missed FAR by one point too. At the end of the day, you can remind yourself that you are doing everything you can to be prepared for the retake. No one can study all day, every day.

Keep hammering away and good luck on the 6th.
