    Hi

I am new to this forum,to cut the long story short,I am applying to schools around DC,with the intention of a double degree in accounting and finance(to fill the 150 credits and get the best of both worlds).I am seriously thinking about doing big 4 afterwards and get the cpa.

    The problem:

I am 28,my past job exp was in chartering vessels back in my home country. For some reason I want to go down the accounting &finance path, any food for thought ?

As far as getting into big four, I think your best bet is through whatever school you end up going to. If they have any type of career fair or career service on campus, make every effort to go there. Big four often have regional recruiters lurking around college campuses. Get to know them, let them know you're interested in getting involved in big four. They offer a ton of programs (leadership programs, internships, etc.) that transition into full time offers.

Also, I know the big four host several academic competitions (case studies, etc.). Make an effort to get involved with that. Even if you don't win its a great networking opportunity. If you do happen to win you're basically guaranteed an internship, which I would say 90+% of the time leads to a full time offer.

The other route is if you know someone who already works in big four and can connect you with HR/recruiters.

I think those are your best bets.

As far as your age and previous work experience, I wouldn't worry too much about it. I started big four in January and our starting class had many nontraditional staff. Several people in their late 30's/mid 40's transitioning to a new profession, etc.

One guy in my office practiced as an engineer for 5-10 years before going back to school and getting his MAcc, so there is plenty of opportunity for you.

Make sure that you go to a school that is recruited by Big 4 and strive to network with individuals that already work for the Big 4.

Make sure you keep your GPA up … Do you already have a BA? If you are just starting your BA then you have a couple years until Big 4 will even consider you. Internships start Junior year of college for Big 4 I believe.

best way to get into big4 is through a referral from somebody senior, at least 50% of hires are done that way, sad truth. also if you want to get in through school, consider yourself lucky if you even get a chance to speak to a Recruiter, and if you do & they like you, then you have many difficult interviews to get by.

you also must have good gpa, extracurriculars, be a member of an accounting/tax society at your school, and preferably have a few internships under your belt already

Get in as an intern. Once you have your foot in the door you're basically hired.

    AUD - 84, 03/2015 (first try)

I got 99 problems but the CPA ain't one.
