I know this has been asked in years past, but tastes change and I wanted the latest info.

I finally passed one portion of the CPA exam. I am looking for work so I wanted to add this to my resume. I was thinking of showing:

CPA candidate: California Board of Accountancy

    REG passed

Is this correct? I know not to add my score. I will show the score on my Linkedin since that has more complete info. Or don’t show there either?

    Thanks everyone.

I personally included my future test dates for the other sections. All employer's i've interviewed with seemed to have liked to see I had a plan and anticipated time line for being a CPA.

    BEC - PASS JULY 2014
    FAR - PASS DEC 2014
    AUD - PASS FEB 2015
    REG - PASS MAY 2015

I think the best would be to leave it off until you are actually licensed. Otherwise, leave it off until you have passed all four and have submitted your application. I would avoid putting it on now, because you don't know how soon you will pass the rest of the sections. There are a lot of people that have passed some sections and have never completed them all.

You will increase your chances of getting a job if you show on your resume that you are on the CPA track and you have already passed one or two parts. There are many Accountants competing with you who have not even considered the idea of studying for this exam.

Definitely include the parts you have passed on your resume. Firms, especially Big 4, want applicants that have demonstrated they can pass the exam. I would include your expected tests dates as well.

You can always have CPA candidate – in process of taking exams or currently sitting for exams somewhere on ur resume or CL. Then during your interview a natural question will be to ask how far along are you. Listing each section out is kinda tacky IMO – listing scores is even worse. If you are emailing CPA firm recruiters, you can also mention that you passed one section and have your next one coming up. Weirdly it is more appropriate to mention then than in your resume itself.

I mentioned it at the top under “objective” and then the test i had passed under “skills”. And I would definitely mention it in your cover letter.

I dont remember where I had it, but I had something like:

CPA Candidate – BEC: Passed, REG: Passed, AUD: 8/5/2012, FAR: 10/15/2012

Probably also depends on where you're applying, but public really likes people to get the exams out of the way, thus you already sitting for them, looks great,

I had it on my resume as “CPA Candidate” and the sections passed, then something like “License Anticipated Dec 2014”. I didn't have specific test dates, but still showed an intended timeline.

I had mine listed right under my degree, stating the sections passed. I however didn't include anticipatory dates since I've learned long ago with the CPA, what I anticipate generally isn't what happens.

    BEC x1 - Passed
    REG x2 - Passed
    Audit x1 - Passed
    FAR x2 - Passed

    BEC: ☑ x1 attempt(s)
    REG: ☑ x2 ''
    AUD: ☑ x1 ''
    FAR: ☑ x2 ''

    Done!

Just make sure the term CPA candidate doesn't violate any rules in your state (I think this is ridiculous, but it is what it is)

When I was interviewing initially (this is round two at the CPA exam, four years later for me), I had mission, or goal statement at the top of my resume. In that paragraph, I included that I had passed FAR, had 150 hours (a requirement in my state) and planning to sit for the other three sections. I didn't mention candidacy because it can be misinterpreted that I passed all four and just needed a year's experience.

Thanks for your help everyone. I will list REG Exam: Passed. I chickened out from putting my AUD test date, only because things can change. I had never thought of mentioning the cpa sections on my cover letter though. I will definitely list the section I passed and that AUD is next.

I had never known that some states won't allow the phrase CPA candidate to be listed. Here in CA you cannot translate notary public into Spanish. Even Spanish ads have to say notary public in English. I will list CPA candidate on both my resume and Linkedin.

Cover letters are great places to let potential employers know that you're working your way through the exam. 🙂
