I am curious how other people present it on their resume. I talked to a lady at a resume clinic and she was trying to get me to just say masters in accounting but I feel there is a distinct difference between having a masters in accounting and having one in taxation accounting (especially depending on what kind of job you want). what do you guys think? for anyone who is getting or has gotten a masters in taxation accounting, how do you write your degree on your resume?

I have no experience with this, but it seems that a master's in tax would be more appealing than a master's in accounting if you are going for tax positions.

I think I would only try to call it a master's in accounting if you were going for an audit or financial reporting positions.

Yea thats what I was thinking because I decided to do a masters in taxation as opposed to the general track or audit because I wanted a tax related job. I am just not sure if it would maybe be misleading to call it is masters in taxation accounting even though the program I am in is called “taxation”. maybe it is a concentration?

I would just put whatever the title of your program is… my resume says Master of Science in Taxation

    REG - 76 (7/13)
    FAR - 83 (8/13)
    BEC - 87 (10/13)
    AUD - 84 (1/14)

Whatever your school calls the program is what you should put on your resume. It's not a degree I've ever heard of (I've heard taxation or accounting but never tax accounting) and think it's a great conversation starter!

I just realized my transcript says both >_>

    Current Program

    Master Of Science

    Program: Taxation

    College: Graduate School

    Major and Department: Accounting, Accounting

    Major Concentration: Taxation

    What to do…

Based on your transcript…it sounds like you got a master's in Accounting with a concentration in taxation. This would imply to me that you took 3 or 4 courses in tax and the rest were accounting.

If the majority of the classes were non-tax courses, then it's Accounting but if the majority of your courses were tax, then just put taxation.

If you do use tax, then it assumes that your University has no other degree plans that would qualify as a Masters in Taxation and that the tax courses you took satisfy a degree plan and not just random courses taken.

I don't know why that recruiter would want Masters in Accounting, but there are actually not many schools which provide a Masters in Taxation (only a general masters in accounting), so from all my POV “masters in taxation” stands out more.

How does the department market itself on your school's website? The school where I got my MS in accounting markets their tax option as “Master of Science in Tax Accounting.”

Another thought would be to ask the registrar at your school what name should be used for the degree, so that when a future employer calls the registrar to verify your degree, your resume will for certain match what the registrar tells them.
