Hi All. Please help, I need some feedback! Here’s my background:

    – Had 3 internships in college, two as a Tax Intern (two tax seasons), one – bookkeeping in QuickBooks for small company (8 months)

    – 1.5 yrs. worked for private, but large with complex structure company (multiple locations, subsidiaries, different service lines)

    – 6 months in public in the Accounting Department

    – I am a CPA.

My question is, would it be realistic to apply for Sr. Accountant positions in private? They all say 3-5 yrs. of experience, I have only 2 after college (should I count my internships as well?). But I feel they might be exaggerating about 3 yrs. Do I need to get more experience to qualify? I haven’t been getting any interviews, I am frustrated a bit.

    I appreciate everybody’s $0.02.

if you think you can do the job then I would apply for it. I remember seeing jobs that asked for at least 2 years of experience when I was getting out of college and I would still apply. Even when you look at entry level positions a lot of them usually ask for one of the experience.

It really depends more on the job description you're reading than the title. Senior can be very broad, from one step above staff to practically controller level depending on the company. If the job description lists tasks that you have some experience in, definately apply regardless of the years. Actually apply either way but be mindful if your resume doesn't list experience in areas the employer feels is key to the position, you're less likely to get called for an interview.
