    A little background….

Back in 2010, I was an undergrad sophomore in college, and knew the Big Four track was the route to take to guarantee a job and comfortable living after I graduate. I was not the best at my accounting classes, receiving B/B- in my accounting class. One day, I received a 70 on a Stats midterm when the class avg was a 90. I knew I had to do something outstanding if I was going to get into a Big Four. I ran into a friend who introduced me to an accounting scholarship. After writing a great essay and doing well in interviews, I received the scholarship, went to a convention, caught the attention of Big Four, and got into one of them.

In 2013, after graduating with 150 credits, I started working for the Big Four as an auditor. The job went fine my first year, I received a Meeting expectation on all my engagements. However 10 months into the job, the managers had a consensus meeting and my score for the year came back as a Did Not meet expectations rating. I was not promoted to a second year auditor and did not receive a raise. For the people who get a not meeting expection rating, they are put on an improvement plan for a year, if they get another did not meet expecting rating, they will be fired.

Fast forward to today, I have been on a few new engagements since I received the not meeting expectation rating. Although some engagements did not go as well as I hoped, I was banking on doing well at my busy season client so that I can get a Meeting Expectation rating. However yesterday, I was discussing year end evaluations with my busy season partner and it turns out that he was very disappointed in my performance, I received feedback from him and received a not meeting expectation for the engagement. I was completely devastated when he told me that, because during the engagement, everthing seemed fine, but it did not meet his expectations. On my schedule, I am scheduled on my current client til the end of this week, and will likely be fired after this week. However, I made progress in my working papers at my current client and the team is understaffed, and would really like to extend me longer, so they are talking to HR about it, and HR is not sure they can extend me after what had happened. My manager does not want a new staff member to continue where I left off because it would be a lot of my senior to explain to a new team member, he would prefer if I get extended for 2 extra weeks so that I can be here from start to end of engagement. I am not sure if this manager knows the detail of what has happened to me, but I feel confident that I can help him and the team greatly with finishing up the engagement.

What I am going to do now is to fix my resume and contact people who have reached out to me on Linkedin so that I can try to get a new job and quit my current one before getting fired. I have seen some of my other colleagues who had similar situations get fired after receiving my rating. I have worked in public accounting for 1yr 10 months. My goal is to have 3 years of PA experience and pass CPA exam. As you can see from my signature, it has been a struggle, but I am making progress. Praying for a pass on May 5th. I am trying to get a fresh start at another Big Eight firm, so that they can reimburse for exam. What I think I will do is try to convince my manager to get me extended for another 3 weeks so that I can help the team finish the work. In that 3 week, I will have enough time to apply for new jobs.

I hope you guys can understand me, and not be harsh of me screwing up this opportunity w/ B4 firm. Honestly, accounting is not really for me. I majored in it because I wanted to be safe and have a job. I did it to support my parent with the bills and I still live at home with them. I sometimes feel I do not belong in b4, my peers did better than me in their accounting courses and I basically just wrote a fancy essay to get in, and it was not because of my grades that I got in. I am trying to get CPA exam passed and have another year under my belt so that I can afford to take some risks and pursue something I am more passionate about, that is the dream. And if I fail, I know I can always fall back to accounting if I have the years of experience and the exams passed. I have told my parents last year about my below expectation rating. But I did not tell them about the call that I had with my partner yesterday and that I am expecting to be fired yet, but will plan to tell them soon.

My plan is to convince my manager for an extension on my engagement, use some of that time to hopefully get a new job, because it will be extremely difficult to get a new job once you do not have a current job. And when I get the new job, give in my resignation notice before officially getting fired….I really need your help guys, I do not know what to do, I spend the whole day thinking about this and I cannot sleep and am being tormented. Any advice would help..Thank you for reading this far!!!

TLDR: Found out I received a below meeting expectation rating and will likely be fired after this week, trying to get a new job before officially being fired…

Getting a new job in public accounting in 2-3 weeks at the end of busy season is not going to be easy. I would suggest you apply to private accounting/industry jobs as well if you really want to get a job within 2-3 weeks. Still not going to be super-likely, but apply to more jobs increases your chances.

When I was at the green dot (I only know this is where you work because of you mentioning the consensus meeting) when you were put on probation they would tell you what you needed to do between then and midyear. Did you sit down with your counselor to talk about what you needed to do to get meeting expectation? Are you just not grasping the work or is it more about personality. I know people that would get bad ratings because their seniors and managers didn't really like them.

I would apply to every job out there whether it's public accounting or industry just becauSe you don't want to put all your eggs in one basket. If you ask for an extension and get an extension on the client you are on now how are you going to interview?

@ruggercpa2b I felt my team and I got along fine, it was a recurring client, my partner expected nearly perfect work from me because I was on that client for the second year. The bad thing is that my counselor works in the same state as me but in another office, so I never met my counselor in person and we would just talk over the phone. I am definitely going to apply for every accounting job out there and hopefully get one that supports my cpa goals. btw how come when you said, while you were at the green dot, do you not work there anymore? did you get a new job? if so what did you do after, thanks for your help!

I left 5 months ago and now work in healthcare as internal auditor. I enjoy the work I do now. Not so stressful.

The way the counsellors were structured kinda sucks if you were not in the same office. Also I found that at times you would feel like everyone gets along but when it comes down to it may have expressed disappointment to the partner regarding where they thought you should have been compared to your peers.

With your experience it should not be too hard to get interviews. Just make sure you have a solid response when asked why you are looking to leave especially if you are interviewing at other Big 4s.

From my experience, if you try to work in a profession that you hate, it will be very hard to succeed at it and in other areas of your life. You need to try to find out what your gift is and hone in on that. Your gift is something that you do very well with little effort. I always used to tell people, you are either good at accounting or you're not. You either love it or you hate it. I knew I wanted to be a CPA when I was 14 so I started taking accounting in high school and got all A's. My classmates couldn't figure out how I did it. The numbers just made sense to me. Now, when I tried my hand at real estate sales, I majorly sucked at it. During the boom, I made some good money but that was only because it was a seller's market. After the bubble burst, my commissions dried up because I couldn't sell my way out of a paper bag.

Find your life's gift and stop wasting time on something that you don't care that much for. If you want to use the CPA as a stepping stone to other things, so be it but don't waste your life doing this if you're not passionate about it.

I worked there for 2.5 years. It took me almost a year of looking. I went on multiple interviews but I always lost to someone who was already a CPA. My friend stopped asking me about my job search because she couldn't keep up with all the interviews I was going on. Some people are fortunate to get something right away but it took me some time. Looking for a job was pretty much a full time job for me. One thing I learned was to make sure the next job would be the right fit.

i disagree with fsugirl. u do not have to love something to be good at it and i would bet 90% of the people in the accounting field do not wake up in morning and think i cant wait to do some accounting!

accounting is something everyone has to practice to get good at. u dont have to love it u just have to learn it and once u do, it wont be so bad.

@fsugirl2005 thank you for your advice. i definitely dont hate accounting. I am very content being an auditor for the big four, i like that i work at different locations based on where my client is, that way i am not always comign to the same office every day. also the corporate perks are pretty nice. but I dont love it and its not my passion. if i can choose to be whatever, i would like to travel the world, blog about it, and make a living doing that, but jobs like that are rare. i am using accounting as a safety net to fall back on so that one day when i pursue something else, if it goes bad then i can always go back to this. i am curious if you have any advice with job search, you seem to have alot of experience working.

@ruggercpa2b can you please clarify, did you mean to say you were searching for your current job for a year after the 2.5 years after you left B4. So while you were searching for a job, were you still employed? If not, how did you manage to answer questions about your unemployment?

@cprv19 you seem to be good at accounting, i was wondering if you can provide any career and job search advice

I am well aware that there are people who do well at jobs that they don't really care for. I guess it all has to do with perception and personality. I care more about doing what I love rather than thinking about the money. The money comes second or third. It's just like some people become doctors and lawyers because they think there is money in it but could care less about helping patients and victims/defendants. I guess it just all depends on the person.

There's also, though, some people who don't have any particular profession that they're passionate about…I'm one of those. I enjoy accounting, but I also enjoyed working in food service, retail, etc. That being said, I'm very glad that I chose accounting as a career, because my job suits me very well and I do believe I have skill in accounting. However, I'm not passionate about it. Nor am I passionate about any other career option. Sometimes picking something you can excel at is more important than something you love, or the only option if you're pretty content with any line of work.

    @ Lilla

If you're good at accounting and your peers and supervisors recognize the good job you're doing, then accounting is probably your gift. Maybe you just don't realize it. I guess you don't necessarily have to be “passionate” about it but you definitely have to like what you do. From experience if you don't like what you do, you end up feeling like you're missing something in your life. Obviously accounting is fulfilling for you. That's good. =)
