I got an ADA accommodation

As stated, I was approved for an ADA accommodation and since my search in this forum didn’t yield a lot of results on the topic, I thought I would share.

The process was quite simple. My NTS did take like 1.5 weeks longer to receive but not a big deal.

I printed the ADA form, filled it out, sent a copy to my doctor (showing him what he needed to include in the letter), then when I had both of those documents in hand, I mailed them off to the address on the form. When I filled out my online application, I selected the ADA accommodation box. That’s pretty much it. They emailed me and mailed me a letter stating that I was approved to sit for my section and that I was granted an additional 30 minutes per section. I did have to call Prometric vs. scheduling online but that took all of 5 minutes.

I have multiple sclerosis (clinically definite) so I’m not sure if the process would be a bit more difficult for things like ADD.

    Brief overview of study method:
    1. Skim through chapter quickly
    2. Watch lecture videos
    3. Take a lot of notes on what the lecturers emphasize
    4. Complete half HW after lectures half after rewriting notes

It's not an ADD accommodation- it's an ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) accommodation. I got the ADA due to my MS (not ADD).

Did you apply for an NTS yet? That is where you check the box that you have a disability and will be submitting the ADA paperwork.

You just print and fill out this form: https://www.nasba.org/files/2011/08/ADA_Accommodations.pdf and obtain a letter from your neuro attesting to the fact that you have been diagnosed with MS, and mail both of those documents to the address on the form.

Your application is essentially on hold until they get the ADA docs and approve them. If they do not receive them (actually happened to me), they will have you email them the forms – so make sure to make copies before mailing!

The ADA form has some language indicating that you need to show that similar accommodations have been made in the past (for you or others – can't recall), but I did not include that on anything. I figured that MS is well enough known to be a disability, which is accommodated. I also called the ADA coordinator many months ago and asked if cognitive fatigue in MS was something they were familiar with and would accommodate, and he said yes.

Also, when I asked my neuro for the letter, I also included a copy of the ADA form and asked them to review that for the information they needed to include in the letter. I think this is good to do.

In short, it's as straightforward as I provided in my initial post. Just get the form + the neuro letter and mail it to them. On your NTS application, designate that you will be requesting an ADA accommodation. That's pretty much it.

Happy to help! On the form, where it said what kind of accommodation I would need, I put that I needed a 10-15 minute break after each 1.5-2 hours and/or additional time. I noticed that my performance really declines if I do not take a break and “reboot”.
