So, I found out last Friday that I was getting a lot of additional responsibilities added to my formal job description, but no additional pay. I was hired in as an entry level staff accountant and was gradually given more and more of my coworker’s higher level work to do (while she spends more and more time on Facebook each day). I finally stuck up for myself about a year ago and my boss agreed that my position description should be evaluated. One year later and I find out that I get the additional responsibilities formerly added, but no raise. I currently make about 25-30% less than the average accountant makes in my area. I have a MBA and about 10 years of experience.

I was in tears last week when I found out and I let my boss know that I feel taken advantage of. Now I feel like I am shunned because I stood up for myself. I have a follow up meeting with him that he initiated this afternoon. Has anyone else been in this situation?

Sorry, best of luck to you and you should stick up for yourself. If you don't then who else would?

I had planned to start looking after I finish my last exam and get my license. After I found out about this, I did send out one resume. I am so tired of feeling like a doormat.

Don't sweat it, I think you have done the right thing based on the facts your provided. Companies today will take advantage of you, your boss will, your co-workers will, I have had it happen and I have seen it happen. So far you have played it right, and this meeting is a good thing for you no matter what. I think you will either be commended for doing this extra work and given a raise or possibly let go. I would not let that upset you though, based on your experience and education you can be out there making the pay you deserve which is more than you are getting now.

It's going to work out for you this afternoon no matter what, stay positive and let us know how it goes.

I don't think you will be fired unless you were unprofessional when you made your plea. Firing people without cause can backfire with lawsuits and such, and is bad for general morale. Then again Corporate America is a vicious place. If you are a woman you can play that angle, which can scare the pants off a manager and end up with bigger severance.

I spoke to an ancient wise man who sent me on a mushroom induced journey through an ancient forest to find the key to passing the CPA exam. A talking spider monkey told me to throw the last of my drinking water in the dirt to find what I was looking for. So I followed his instructions and the following message appeared in the soil:

"Do 5000 multiple choice questions for each section"

If you think you are gonna be fired for not allowing yourself to be taken advantage of, then they heard you. this company want whimps. You say you are being underpaid and over worked, so if they don't fire you, you should be looking for another job anyway. Everybody wants to be appreciated…and paid. Good luck.

    It begins with a 75

OP – I have been in a similar situation. I was attending graduate school to get my MBA, and was being paid 20%-25% below market value. I did the research on my positions pay, and submitted it to HR for review. The president of the company was also talking about a mentorship program for promising employees to work up to executive management. The day after receiving my MBA I went to discuss these opportunities, and was told everything had been shelved. I was also informed by HR that my pay was correct for my position, which was a crock of sh!t.

What did I do? I called my wife immediately with the update, and she started scanning the web for local jobs. I received a job offer making 50% more by the end of the week. The demand for accountants is promising, and you should not worry about this. Still, I think you should search for a new job no matter the outcome. They have already shown their character by taking advantage of you, and I would not work for someone who does not value their employees.

    Application Mailed: 3/16/15
    Professional Conduct Exam: 97
