Hi all. I wanted to draw from this forum’s infinite wisdom and ask you all if you have had or currently have a job with the CPA where you are helping others on a daily basis? I’m not completely fulfilled sitting in a cubicle cranking out ad-hoc reports with Excel every day. Any ideas for jobs with a CPA license that are fulfilling in terms of helping people and bettering society? Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

My friend is a CPA and she has always wanted to get a job that is fulfilling. She works for a not for profit organization. The only downside to that is that she doesn't make much money.

Work for an NGO that supports causes you care about. I think that is really fulfilling. You'll get to be part of the impact they are making in their communities and/or the world.

Or keep your paycheck but volunteer for causes you care about. You can also volunteer your professional services, such as bookkeeping. I volunteer for a crisis hotline one night a week, because I am passionate about psychology. You could even specialize in tax or bookkeeping services for non profits. Or go back to school for your phd, and help students by furthering the accounting profession. It really depends on your passions, but if you went into accounting you probably did it at least partly for the money. Don't give that up!

I understand that accounting isn't the most noble profession, but I always wonder why people get so worked up about this. What are classic examples of “noble” professions? Doctors? You should see how much controversy there is surrounding docs who make patients get unnecessary procedures/tests to fatten their wallets. Non-Profits? Maybe, but how many people actually make a difference there? I work in a city teeming with these and government types and so many of them are disillusioned by what they do and so broke that they are dying to get into the private sector.

Fact is very few people can make a difference and there's multiple ways to do it. Your job doesn't define you unless you let it.

    Teaching accounting at a college?

I was a teacher for 4 years (2nd and 3rd grade). It is very rewarding. You can also do it while you have a regular job. I don't know what all the teaching requirements are for every state. In CA you have to have a Masters to teach at a community college and possibly at the university level, as well.

Almost always from my phone... please excuse my typos!

I worked for a not for profit for a year. I think if I had been passionate about the cause, I probably would have stayed for longer. My main goal was career advancement, so I had to move on. The pay wasn't that great, but the benefits were awesome. I was still heavily involved in day-to-day accounting, but I also was able to help out with various fundraisers or other miscellaneous tasks that made me feel like I was making a difference.

I am a fraud examiner and find it so rewarding. I am helping families and businesses discover and recover from fraud, theft and embezzlement. It can be very stressful, but financial investigators are needed in every industry, government and by individuals!
