If I work in payroll, can I consider it as an accounting experience?

So I just got a job offer to work with payroll in a private company. Even though my long-term goal is to work for an accounting firm and get a CPA license, since I just graduated from college and experience is important to me, I accepted the job offer.

I am still in the process to obtain the CPA license, I am wondering if I can use the payroll experience to meet requirement for the CPA license. I am living in Minnesota and they do not state clearly what types of accounting position will meet the CPA license requirement?

    Thank you!!!

In MA, I believe we need to get a letter from a partner at a CPA firm you worked at to fulfill your 1000 hours or how many hours it is. And the letter needs to come from a CPA, I think.

Gaining accounting experience is a necessary component of earning your CPA certificate. In Minnesota, you must gain one year of experience in addition to meeting the other requirements for becoming a CPA which includes passing the CPA exam, completing 150 college credit hours, and passing the self-study ethics exam.

Your one year of experience can be in:

    Public accounting

    Industry

    Education

    Government

In order for your work experience to count towards earning your certificate, it must be verified by a CPA.

You're probably ok! Just make friends with a CPA there!

brittpone123- does the CPA person who verifies you experience has to be a resident of the same state?

Not that I'm aware of. I worked at KPMG in Rhode Island but I am taking the exam in Mass.

But, in your case, I believe it has to be your supervisor, etc. that can testify to your work experience. I found a few more sections that I could email to you. It's really up to the CPA that you work for at that company and whether or not she/he will write the letter for you.
