If there's EVER a strong argument for an appeals process...

I think I have one. 74 on AUD. I scored HIGHER in BOTH the MC section AND the sims than a comparable candidate in the 75-80 range. I'm at a loss right now. I lose FAR credit (and I don't have 2011 FAR materials), when I anticipated waking up to a score in the 90's. I routinely scored in the high 90's, and never felt as confident leaving the testing center as I did with AUD. So frustrated...kinda numb right now. To think you're done, and then...this.
I know there's <0.1% chance of getting a score overturned, but since this is the difference between being DONE and only halfway there (especially since its been 18 months since I conquered FAR), I think this is worth a shot.

Thoughts?

I used Bisk pre-11 (good firm discount). I used CPAexcel for BEC/AUD 2011, they had a buy one-get one offer. I assumed I would not need FAR materials...Bisk helped me skate by with a 75 way back in '09...not very up to date material, however :(

I had heard Phil Yeager say that when he asked the AICPA about appealing grades they told him "we have never changed a grade when it has been appealed". I don't know what to tell you bc i can understand not wanting to take FAR again but I also wouldn't want to pay for something that there is no hope in changing the score on; which is why I never have paid for an appeal...

I saw a statistic on the TSBPA website that said <0.1% have been changed from a failing score to a passing score...which tells me more than that have been changed, just not necessarily from (under) to (at or above) 75...
If I was at a 73, I don't believe I'd consider it...but being at a 74, and seeing the grade breakdown that overall I scored HIGHER in BOTH mc and sims in comparison to candidates in the 75-80 range, I cannot for the life of me see how they justify a 74, other than knowing that this will create a revenue stream of at least 2 more examination fees...
Seriously, if someone scores HIGHER in BOTH categories of a test than people who pass, how does one fail? This makes no sense to me...if it was comparable, or weaker, in even one of these, I would understand...exceeding passing candidates in each category does not warrant a failing score, no matter how you slice it - transparent or not.
Going from the numb to the denial and anger phase...

TXNewbie - I'm really sorry to hear. Not passing by 1 point and losing another section is heartbreaking. Unfortunately, there is probably nothing at all you can do :( Appealing has a 0 chance of working.

I am sorry to hear that you lost by 1 point. I think it might be better for you to call nasba and ask them how it is possible that you scored higher in both areas and did not pass. it may be a mistake? i don't know if it is justified for you to pay a lot and get almost 100% nothing.
i am also impressed by you scored as high as 98 in the practice exams. i passed AUD in this window with 85 for my first try. but i did awful on the practice exams which was ranged from 39 - 80(only got it once, and the most in lower 60s). i felt lucky. I used 2010 Becker review materials and passmaster, complemented with Wiley 2011 test bank.
good luck and hope we all pass in the following exams.

@TXnewbie. Honestly, I have zero faith in these score diagnostic things. Honestly, I think they use a dart board to figure out where you fall. I was weaker in everything except gov’t accounting for FAR. M/C was weaker and simulations were comparable and somehow this translates to a 71. Perhaps the content area only applies to the M/C. Now there are no longer percentages so I have no idea if I was one point or 10 points weaker. I have received the same breakdown for FAR before and I scored a 61. Not sure if an appeal would do you much good since they aren’t going to change your grade regardless of the outcome. Since they don’t release the scoring process knowing how many questions you answered correctly won’t help. Sucks, but don’t give up!

Thanks for the input. I just talked to the wonderful TSBPA qualifications division - apparently there is no such thing as an appeal process - score review or score appeal (they waved their hand through the phone - these are not the droids you are looking for...) I referenced the aicpa's score review/appeal process link -

and he said they had something like that, but was discontinued 15-20 years ago. I then mentioned how I thought it was funny he could say that, when I saw the appeal process URL on the TSBPA website last month (it has since been scrubbed)...he put me on hold, came back, and said, 'yeah, we stopped that about a year ago - (and I quote) YOU GET WHAT YOU GET.' Classy.
I asked him if there was any recourse, or anyone he could transfer me to, he said no. So I summarized - 'What you're telling me is that, based solely on my jurisdiction, I have no recourse for an appeal/review/anything of the kind?'
He said yes, and happy testing. click.
I really hate the TSBPA. I want to leave work and cry.

Txnewbie,

So sorry about your score. I understand your frustration especially since you lose FAR as well. As far as the performance report goes, I agree with dem80 as to how much sense they make. You asked how it's possible you scored stronger in MCQ and sims but failed the exam. Think about this. There are probably a lot of people who had a passing score in one and a failing score in the other, but the overall average was in the 75-80 range. Depending on what the average score is for each section and how much you need to be above it to get a stronger rating, I could see how you could score a 74 and get the report you did. How did you do in the individual categories?

FAR 4/1/11 - 89
AUD 4/15/11 - 85
REG 4/29/11 - 80
BEC 5/13/11 - 85

There were 6 MC breakdowns, and no sim breakdowns... I scored weaker in 2, comparable in 1, and stronger in 3 of the 6 mc categories...this would lead me to believe I was slightly above 'comparable,' until you get to the bottom of the report...

Overall - MC's - Stronger
Sims - Stronger

Maybe I was only a few points stronger, but if I am stronger in each category than the typical candidate in the 75-80 range, I don't see how I can not be at least on par with that score. Notwithstanding the 2 'weaker' MC categories...if those pulled me down more than the 3 stronger brought me up, why would it say, overall, MC's were 'stronger' than a passing candidate? This still frustrates and confuses me. A little bit of disclosure and transparency would go a long way in this respect :/

The TSBPA actually just saved you money. Appeals process doesn't work, especially in this computerized environment. NASBA rarely makes sense as shown by your performance report. Unfortunately it is what it is... your better off getting back to studying than bothering with this anymore.

Good luck on your next exam. Once you pass it all, I'm sure you'll tell this story for humor-sake to other CPA and CPA candidates.
