I'm an intern & I get no work

    I’m a tax intern at a midsize firm in NYC & about half the time I literally have no work to do. I email everyone in my group everyday, and it just seems no one wants to give me work. A few of the interns also have the same problem, and some are almost always busy. It seems the audit interns get more work & even get to travel to clients

    It’s definitely a demeaning feeling not doing anything; at least I get to study more for school & the CPA test.

    Hopefully things turn around…

    this post made me laugh. Reminds me when I was a temp at a large public company. My job was to email 10-15 people every morning ask them if there was anything I could do to help otherwise I did nothing. That job taught me how to look busy. Looking busy can be very stressful at times.

    If the managers/seniors don't have any work for you, I would follow-up with them and ask them if there's anything they would recommend that you read, like industry bulletins or accounting bulletins, which might prepare you for your next job (if you're put on one). I always like it when our interns and first year staff take that extra step to show some initiative to become a better employee by learning about what their supposed to be doing.

    I understand this issue as a former big four intern, no need to worry it stressed me out everyday but it did not effect my offer. As long as you are asking for work and making sure everyone knows you exist when they have work to give you are doing all you can. It can be difficult to pass off work when explaining it is either impossible or more time consuming than the task so just dont worry and do good work when it is actually given to you! Also get good at passing time… i have spent a full 10 hour day with hardly any work. It is much more difficult than having work I can promise you that.

    The bad thing is that every 2 weeks I have to show a partner the total amount of time I worked for each client explaining what I did.

    I just feel it looks bad showing client billable hours for only half the actual time, the partner seems a little upset when they see that 50% “productivity ratio”

    @AJ yea, people seem to laugh when I tell them about this situation as well

    @ Trip I actually started reading some industry news, def seems like a great idea with free time

    @taxgod
    Thanks for the re-assurance, just going to do the best job I can whenever I actually do get some work, and of course I ask many people every day for work, I guess this is just how things are!

    I did an internship last winter with B4 and will be starting there this fall. I worked a TON. I think it totally depends on your industry/clients and the business need. I was in assurance and it was busy season so I had some 90+ hr weeks, but it slowed down quite a bit towards the end. I wouldn't worry if you are not getting work, since my buddy who was at same B4 as me was in Tax and would sometimes get 10 hours of work to do in an entire week, and otherwise would sit in a conference room and just do research and surf the web. I wouldn't look into it. You are getting paid to hang out, enjoy it!

    Had the same experience when I interned in college. I've also noticed similar with interns I've worked with over my brief career. It seems to be more of timing than anything that determines how much work the intern will get. If the intern gets put on a team mid-way through an audit, most of the easy work is already done and the rest of the assignments require auditor judgment/experience which isn't easy to teach when everyone has deadlines.

    Its not like all of the assignments couldn't be done by the intern, it just that it would take too long to teach the intern what they need to know. Also even if there is enough time to teach the intern how to do the work, sometimes the work isn't given out until another staff with more experience is free to tackle the assignment because with an intern you'll have to extensively review their workpapers because the quality of work is likely not great.

    whats your email address? i have work you can do!! 🙂

    JK – it was the SAME thing for me when i interned at the firm i am still with today and that was 4 years ago… if the partner seems upset about it, maybe ask them what you could be doing with your time that would be more productive?

    SAME boat. My internship is only 6 weeks and I've only been at client for the first 3 weeks. Will be in the office for the last 3. I'm consistently wondering how am I going to be evaluated when I have no work? Because I NEED the offer afterwards.
