I'm moving out of state. Can I transfer my CPA scores to another state?

So I’ve passed two sections of the CPA exam (BEC and AUD) in Florida, but in 2 months I’m moving to either North Carolina or Arizona. My wife got accepted to med schools in those states and we’re trying to figure out which she is going to go to. But my question is do I just transfer my scores to either one of those two states? Or do I continue to sit for them in Florida and just transfer my license over once I’ve passed all 4 parts? Also, does anyone know if it matters which state you get your work experience in? For example if you pass all four parts in Florida, do you have to get your work experience in Florida? Thanks for the help guys!

    AUD - 79
    BEC - 88
    FAR - 78
    REG -

The exam itself is (supposedly) uniformed so I don't think it matters at all where you sit for the exam. You can transfer exam scores from state to state. What matters is about where you try to get licensed and whether or not you meet all the requirements for that state's license. Take a look at the requirements under each of those state's Board of Accountancy websites and you should be able to see the differences between states to determine whether you could get a license there.

Side question: Where in NC? I'm from the triangle, right near Duke and UNC. Excellent medical schools!

Right now I am taking the exam in TN, but have a job that I start in KY in September. TN requires the candidate to take the ethics exam but KY does not. If I pass all of my exams in TN, then try to transfer to KY, will I still need to complete the ethics part?

It depends on where you are trying to get a license from. If you want to be licensed in KY then I would think you should follow the rules for KY licensing and transfer your exam scores to KY before you apply for your license. If they don't require ethics then you shouldn't have to take ethics. You could always call the board and ask. They'll be able to tell you for sure.

I recently graduated in NC (GO HEELS!) but accepted a job and am working in Texas. Once I got here, I realized that Texas has quite strict requirements regarding hours of ‘upper accounting' (in their eyes) and that I fell 2 credit hours short. I had already started studying for the CPA and wanted to get going on passing the exams – my solution was to just go ahead and sit for “NC” exams even though I am in Texas. Once I finish all my exams and the experience requirement I plan on getting licensed in NC and worry about transferring then.

I have also gotten some advice suggesting I may not even need to transfer. I work in industry and the state in which you are licensed really only matter if you are signing audit documents or get to the CFO level (not exactly applicable to me right now!)

I guess my advice would be to get the license in a state in which you currently meet the requirements – which sounds like Florida. And then after you have completed everything reevaluate where you want to be permanently and if it is necessary to transfer.

Good luck with whatever you decide – and I would HIGHLY suggest North Carolina over Arizona 😉

@CPAMommyof3 I knew all along I would be working in KY, but KY would not allow me to sit for the exam while I was still in college working towards my 150 hrs. TN would so that is why I signed up to take the exam there.
