Increase chances of interview

I’m currently an intern at a midsized firm in LA. I have 2 weeks left of my internship, I’m supposed to know if I get an offer afterwards. But start date won’t be until Sept. Anywho, I actually have been applying to other firms in the meantime, because I need options and want to work somewhere after the internship.

There are companies that have listed postings and such, but through my research and google, I found the actual recruiter’s email and have emailed them. Very basic, personalized email and cover letter along with resume of course. There is this firm that I’m interested in, I emailed them last LAST friday and I followed up this morning with “I was wondering if you received my resume.”

She actually replied and said, “We’re currently in the processing of reviewing resumes…..Thank you”

Does this mean that my resume was overlooked? Because I had the same response during the Fall from one of the firms.

How do I increase my chances of an interview if I’m going to keep cold-emailing them like this?

That is too soon to be following up in my opinion. You basically given them 1 business day to respond. Some firms may take that as being naggy and impatient.

I emailed them on 2/20 and again at 3/2, she replied at 3/2. I gave them eight days.

I do not think your resume has been overlooked. Her response just means that that they are in the process of reviewing all the resumes that they have received. Considering you are not the only person that has applied, they probably have a handful of resumes to go through. I am a big advocate for following up but you also do not want to seem pushy. It can get annoying. I would give them at least 2 weeks to go over the resumes and see if you hear anything back about a phone interview or an in person interview. Then I would follow up again. I know people get impatient but do not forget professional etiquette. It would be great to get a response right away but it doesn't always work that way.

Well for starters, 12 days (particularly in a public firm during busy season) is a modest window for reviewing resumes. Perhaps they're just gathering them now and going to actively interview after April 15.

The best way for you to increase your chances of an interview, honestly, is to have a resume that makes the firm interested in you. What do you have for experience? Put yourself in their position, they're going to see tens to hundreds of resumes all from people who have a degree, somewhere on the CPA/wannabe spectrum, and a few years work experience. Does your resume scream “I'M THE BEST PERSON FOR YOUR FIRM” or does it kind of blend into the rest.

Its nice to take some initiative and email direct vs. to a general posting but in my experience, the person screening the resumes is more interested in the content than the delivery.

You need to attend recruiting functions, a “meet the firms” type of event at your college; networking events at your state's CPA society, etc. Firing off a resume and a cover letter (which they likely didn't open) is nice, but to really get in you need to network. Its not about who you know, rather is just displaying to someone that works at the firm that you might be tolerable to sit next to for 12 hours a day and that you might be good facing clients.
