    Hey everyone,

i wonder if anyone knows or has done it before. i am going to be an intern at hedge fund which is not client by public acct firm that i am going to work for full time in in fall. i thought it was fine until one of my friends ask me “are you sure that you can do that”.. so now i am confused since i need to sign confidentiality and non disclosures forms from both firms. i thought as long as if the company is not client of firm, i could work with no issues. any advice would be great!

    Thanks.

I'm not aware of a reason that would be an issue, but the best way to ensure it's fine would be to just let your public accounting firm know. Just an email to HR something along the lines of “Just wanted to let you know that I plan to intern this spring at Hogwarts Hedge Fund, but will complete the internship by May 31, 2016. Please let me know if this will create any issues relative to my beginning employment with Hedgehog Public Accounting in the fall.”

No need to send an email to the public accounting firm. While there are definite concerns about working for a company that your firm audits if you were in a position to influence the financials; as an intern your role is not important enough to be an issue. You are also not an employee of the public accounting firm, so their independence rules do not apply to you. Furthermore you will not be violating any ethic rules for any agency, because your firm does not audit them and you are many years from manager even if you did. Going further there is s good chance that even if your future firm audits one of the hedge fund investments that it will be considered an indirect relationship and you are not even holding stock in them. Don't waste the HR reps time. Your good.
