Internal transfers a catch-22?

Anyone else feel that internal transfers is a catch-22? If you haven’t been here for very long, then other areas want you to stay a while before considering you. But at the same time, the longer you stay where you are, the more knowledge and experience you gain, which means the less your supervisor is willing to let you leave. Is this a fair assessment? And didn’t someone else say that more than likely if there’s an opening someone’s already the favorite? Comments and feedback are welcome.

Develop a good relationship with management in your current practice as well as start networking with your target practice.

Absent a firm need for people in the target group, you will need champions in both areas to allow the move. If there is a need, you'll still need people to vouch for your abilities (current management).

Yes, it's a catch-22. the firms are really great, but don't do a great job of keeping talent. Lots of people I know have jumped among firms in order to make a move to a different practice. The ones I have specifically seen from my colleagues in audit went to Transaction Services at another firm after getting the “After busy season” or “let's talk about this over the next few months” bullsh*t answer from the current firm.

You need to switch firms… That's the easiest way to do it if you don't want to deal with internal politics.
