I am considering internship for a mid-size firm in our area just to get my foot in the door. How does it work and what are the things I need to consider doing it? What do you actually do? Am I working 40 hrs/week, for how long? What’s the reasonable pay? Am I allowed to take part time jobs online (bookeeping/accounting related)?

I guess the first question would be, what type of internship is it, tax or audit? Is the description on the application of what the internship entails?

Not sure. Most probably audit but it can be both?

If it were me, my first step would be to research the firm. Try checking out their website. Usually, they have a careers page that provides information. I don't know if larger firms allow you to work in both current audit and tax for an internship but my current firm is small enough that we allow this.

As an intern, just develop relationships. Raise your hand for work. Be motivated.

If it's not a busy season internship, you're most likely going to be bored out of your mind as there is not enough work for the regular associates let alone you.

Be grateful, act friendly, and show your enthusiasm. If you get work, ask mofo questions, don't wait around for the in-charge to come by and go “how are you doing?” and have them find out you've been sitting on work because you weren't being proactive about asking questions.

    That's really it.

Thanks s2sylvir! I just got a phone call and scheduled an interview for the internship. It says paid internship so as long as it's enough to pay my bills, I'll probably take it hopefully it will lead into a full time position soon. I will still send resumes to other firms, hoping to land a full time position without doing internship. I have 10+ years in private accounting so I hope they will at least give me consideration for that.
