Internship Questions

I work in government accounting currently, but when my husband and I move from Okinawa back to the states in the spring, I’d like to look for work in different areas of accounting. I have a few questions about internships- the university I am going to now (UMUC) offers mainly online classes to military and their dependents overseas, and they haven’t been very helpful in answering these questions. Plus, no campus recruiting or interviews.

    1. I will be in my senior year or possibly already graduated by the time we move back. Is this too late to look for an internship? Should I be looking for permanent positions? If so..what kind of work would I even qualify for?

    2. I currently work in government accounting with about 14 months experience. I was told if I were to seek work at a firm in the states, my work experience wouldn’t count for much. Could this be true?

    3. Is there any way I can apply to internships as a student without going through campus recruiting?

I’d appreciate any tips, advice, anything. I’m feeling a bit confused on what my next step should be.

If your spouse is in the military, then only the two of you can decide if you need to look for permanent employment. If he is being discharged when you get home and you are not looking at another move, then why not look for permanent employment.

As an employer, I can honestly say, that all work experience counts. I had a situation with a young man that walked into my office with zero experience and it showed. It worked out for the best in the end.

My husband is separating, so we would likely be staying put. I was just wondering if it would be appropriate to look for internships rather than permanent full-time work, as a graduate student. Thank you for your help!

Check out the state society in the state you are going to be living in. They may be able to help you with internships or hook you up with a local college that does have campus recruiting. I sincerely hope they would help a military spouse!! If they won't, then keep us posted and maybe someone here can point you in the right direction. What state are you going to be living in?

As far as we know, we will be going home to Alabama, but that could easily change. I am remaining flexible for the sake of my husband finding a job. I didn't think about using campus recruiting. That could be an option.

Birmingham has a chapter for young CPA's. You might want to contact one of them.
