Interview declined be EY; More to come?

I applied to all the visiting public accounting firms who recruit at my school. I got accepted for an on-campus interview at a midsize firm. That was my first yes/no answer. Then, I got my second, which was an EY “we have decided not to interview you”. My resume, I thought, was pretty good. Is this a bad sign; does that mean the other Big 4 and most Big Regionals will probably think I don’t warrant even consideration?

Calm down. You win some, you lose some. Sometimes for one reason or another a firm decides to not interview you. It may be that they filled their interview slots before your resume got to them or some other arbitrary factor. Big deal, others already have shown interest and hopefully there are more to come.

I would make sure you've had your resume reviewed by your school's career center so that you can rule that out, and if you're able to get in some interview practice that's great, too.

For what it's worth: 2 of the Big 4 didn't even invite me for an interview, yet I got an offer from a 3rd (the 4th doesn't recruit at my school) as well as other firms.

Recruitment is stressful, but try not to freak out over every little snub.

EY seems a little weird in my particular region too. All the other firms send young, attractive recruiters to the job fairs. All of them, except EY. They send people who are “off”. Socially awkward, terribily groomed, morbidly obese, etc. And they all look miserable, like work-zombies. Again, this is just what I see. It may in no way reflect EY compared to any of the other accounting firms that recruit in my area, but they are the only one whom I meet a recruiter and think “I don't want to end up like this person”. For what it's worth, anyway.

Don't worry too much about it. It's all depends on need. Like you, EY turned me down for a campus interview. Then 6 months later they called me for an office interview and an offer was tendered next day. So not getting a campus is not the end of the road, just make sure you also apply for a position on their website. They do actually keep your resume on file for later.

your not the only one. Interview denied for EY and PWC. Plenty of other options out there its not the end of the world. And you never know what can happen down the road.

Guys, this is getting even weirder. Me and a classmate both applied for EY and a local Mid-size firm (which I am not going to name). Me and my classmate have the exact same GPA, and very comparable resumes. Somehow, I got selected for the midsize, and rejected by EY, and he got the exact opposite; selected by EY, but rejected by the midsize. It makes me wonder if there's any real rhyme and reason to these things

Getting selected for an interview isn't based solely on GPA. Your classmate could have made an impression on the recruiter or developed some sort of common grounds with that person. You never really know the reason why someone gets picked/rejected over another person.

Just wanted to counter the comment above about EY people. In the northeast region they are very attractive. A lot of super model type people. I've been going to a bunch of meet the firms/campus recruiting these weeks.

Peanut butter, what I'm about to say is meant to be helpful, so please keep that in mind while reading this. If your classmate and you were tied for a job, I would pick your classmate if they used proper grammar. The correct phrase is “my classmate and I” not “me and my classmate.”

While this seems petty, you never know what may be a deciding factor, and I just wanted to inform you.

You need to be on your “A” game, and that is a pet peeve of some interviewers.

@33 is exactly correct. Everyone is competing for the same job so you have to set yourself apart from the competition. Maybe it's how you were dressed? clean shaved? nice nails? confidence? body language? resume had misspellings?

I don't know…. I think possibly just that I had a 3.6, and they only have finite slots, so other people probably just had higher grades. My resume looks GOOD, i have extra curricular stuff, etc. So, I think it's just because I didn't have enough recruiter relations, and maybe because I'm not a good looking girl (although I'm a pretty good looking guy :). Btw, in regards to the comment above, I would never use grammar such as “Person and Me” on an application. This is more informal, it's a forum, a community. Full disclosure: I'm not proofreading this, or any other of my posts, for any and all grammatical and structural errors. I'm simply speaking my mind, looking for advice, and saying thank you when I get it.

Started off at a small regional firm, moved to a larger national and just joined EY so don't sweat it. Take a public job, pass the CPA and move forward from there

I don't know how it works where you live, but those with the best shot are those the firmknow. Those are the officers of accounting organizations, the ones who speak with firms after presentations, those who make good impressions at career fairs/open houses.

    Networking> resume.

Also, maybe they didn't like the way you seemed to judge them like you do in this thread. Body language can be a killer.
