I had an interview with Mcgladrey about a year ago and did not get an offer. The first interview was on campus (University at Albany) and was very standard with normal questions about school and experiences with a few behavioral questions. Then I went to their NYC office for a second round interview a few weeks later. I wasn't sure if I even wanted to go because all the recruiters and professionals I spoke with from McGladrey rubbed me the wrong way and weren't as personable as other firms. The interview started with about 12 candidates and myself being brought to a conference room on a high floor with a great view. I then went for two 45 minute interviews. I believe they were using a good cop/bad cop strategy. The interview first was similar to the on-campus one and was very conversational. The interviewer was an asian women in her mid thirties that had been with the firm for about 7-9 years, if I remember correctly. She was very nice and started it off with “tell me about yourself” and went to standard questions about experiences and why I choose accounting. After about 20 mins we just held a conversation talking about her experiences with the firm and what her typical duties were at different points in her career. The second interviewer was a much older lady who was with McGlarey for 15+ years who was very cold. She asked me the tell me about yourself question and then a few behavioral questions such as “tell me about a time where you didn't get along with a peer” or “how would you handle …. situation.” This lasted about 10 mins leaving about a half hour to go. At this pint she asked if I had any questions so I asked things like why did you choose this firm, what do you enjoy here, what is a typical day like, what is the company culture like, etc. All of which got an extremely short answers and age acted like she didn't want to be there at all. I knew when I left that I wasn't going to receive an offer but I got a pretty nice McGladrey blanket as a consolation prize.

I have come in contact with approximately 10-15 professionals from McGladrey during school and through my current job. The one thing I have learned is that every Mcgladrey employee I have come in contact with acts like McGladrey is the best place on earth and has a level of prestige that cannot be reached elsewhere. They all love bad-mouthing the Big 4 as well. There big sell is that they have high profile clients while not treating their employees like dirt, as the big 4 does. I have friends that work there and all of the big four and they are exactly the same. My recommendation to you is to tell them you do not want to work at the big four and that McGladrey seems like the right fit for you. I would also be prepared with a lot of questions to ask the interviewer incase you have an experience like me.

My girlfriend also had an interview with them and received an offer but turned it down to work at PWC. She said the interview process was the same but both of her interviewers were like my first one. They were very nice and just held a conversation most of the time. I hope you have the experience she had. She also agrees the employees love bashing the Big Four so I would recommend saying that you don't think the Big Four culture is right for you.

This wasn't meant to scare you, I just want you to be prepared because the interview really depends on your interviewer. I hope this was helpful. Good Luck!

I was just curious on how the interview went and if you received an offer. I have an interview with them tomorrow. I am really nervous about it, even though I am not even sure if I want to work there. I already have a job at a small firm that I have been at for over 4 years. But a recruiter contacted me through LinkedIn. After a few phone conversations, I thought I would see what they have to offer. Any advice or tips for the interview tomorrow?

I received an offer from McG within the last year (ended up going with a big 4 instead). The interview was just a conversation.. My advice would be to have as many questions as possible. I pretty much drove the interview. Come to think of it, I am not sure they really asked me more than 1 or 2 questions.

It was very laid back and they were extremely welcoming. Your experience may vary of course, but that is my insight.

    Good Luck!

Hey Jw-83..I got the offer..but I was also campus hire..so no experience..I start in July..so I can't really tell you anything about the culture…I also agree with Olintojr…have as many questions as possible..it really wasn't hard..I was just nervous the whole time cause I was competing for the job with people from good schools..

They told me they will have an answer for me in a week, but they ended up calling on Friday..interview was Monday..

Good luck..and let us know how it went.

I asked a lot of questions..and sent out thank emails to all of them the following day..tried to make them personal..based on how I thought the interview went

The interview went really well. It was with three different people. They each told me about themselves and the company. Then it was basically me asking the questions to them and having a conversation. I feel confident that I will get an offer. I was kind of hoping I wouldn't like the people or the company. But when I left, I felt really good and I really liked everyone I came in contact with. It will be a hard decision if I get an offer.
