    Hi,

I recently passed my CPA exams. To qualify under New York state, I need extra credit hours and currently working towards it. It might take me considerable amount of time (say 1 year). Mean while, I was thinking about becoming an enrolled agent (saw it on https://www.irs.gov/Tax-Professionals/Enrolled-Agents/Enrolled-Agents—Frequently-Asked-Questions website).

Do you think it is worth becoming an enrolled agent? The study material that the website provides is enough for passing the exam? If not, where can I get the study material and at what cost? Please advise….Thanks.

If you're thinking about working in tax, it can't hurt. Especially if you need to get a job while you're still taking classes. Wiley has some materials, but I have no clue what the cost is. Good luck!

My wife is an enrolled agent and does very well working for a tax resolution firm. Could always come in handy if traditional accounting is not for you.

@raggi – I am currently and EA. It is not that tough to get the EA license. It took me a year, but I passed all three SEE exam on the first try. It also help me get a job in tax during the tax season making more than what I do in retail. I probably spent like $600 total to get the EA. That includes the materials, the costs to take the exams, and the application fee. It is a good way to find a job during the tax season or to use it as a stepping stone on your career path in accounting.

Thanks a lot for your responses…

@Skynet – Did you use Wiley or something else? How many hours should I invest to pass these exams? I am hoping it is not as difficult as CPA exams.

I used the Passkey Review Course from Amazon but theu were not really good. if you want to really pass the first time with no hiccups, go with Gleim. A few of my friends used Gleim and pass the exams on the first try. The only reason I passed using the Passkey EA Review from Amazon was i practically studied day and night. The review course from Amazon is more like a supplement than a review course.

Expect to spend an average of 200-300 hrs for each section depending on your study habits. The Individual section is the hardest but once you pass that it gets much easier. The Business part is not as difficult and the Representation section is the easiest. You have a full 3.5 hours for each section so use all 3.5 hours to go over everytbing until you are ready to submit your exam.

Raggi, I used Gleim and passed all the exams on the first try. I'm not sure you need to study 200-300 hours per exam though; I gave myself a week or study for the first part, two weeks for the second, and another week for the last part. Much of parts one and two will be familiar from REG. Part three won't have been covered as much in REG, but it also won't be totally foreign to you. Good luck!

Hi Guys, Thanks a lot for all the info. I plan to take the exams soon and get it done with it. I have couple more questions. Do you need to have CPE credits on a yearly basis? How do you gain these credits?

I read about the cpe credits on their website, something like 36 a year. What I want to know is whether or not CPE credits can count towards both the CPA and EA license. I might take the EA exams while I take the related classes in my MST program.

I spoke to an ancient wise man who sent me on a mushroom induced journey through an ancient forest to find the key to passing the CPA exam. A talking spider monkey told me to throw the last of my drinking water in the dirt to find what I was looking for. So I followed his instructions and the following message appeared in the soil:

"Do 5000 multiple choice questions for each section"
