Is it just me or is Becker not that great

Coming into studying for the CPA, I heard Becker was the best and although it was a little costly, it was well worth it. But coming from my own experience, that doesn’t seem to be the case. Definitely Becker is useful and I like the format of it and all but it just never seems up to date. Even now, they are still using 7.5% for medical expense instead of the new 10%. If I hadn’t been on here, I wouldn’t have caught that and would probably miss points on the exam.

So the exam tests over the newer rules? Joyous. I have reg next so I will have to look out for that.

I am experimenting with Becker for my Audit re-take. All of this “highlight this, circle that” is killing my life…Just give me the facts!

    CPA (2017)

    REG:  75

    BEC:  76

    FAR:  77

    AUD: 78

    CMA (2019)

    P1: 380

    P2: 360

    AUD - 1st - 60 (12/12), 61 (2/13), 61 (8/13), 78! (11/15)
    REG - 55 (2/16) 69 (5/16) Retake(8/16)
    BEC - 71(5/16) Retake (9/16)
    FAR - (8/16)

Obviously everyone is different. I personally love Becker bc it provides me with a ton of MCQ to practice and the instructors actually try to make it fun. The key word is “try”.

    AUD - 92
    BEC - 81
    FAR - 76
    REG - 89
    Never give up!

Becker has worked well for me. I am 25 years out of undergrad and work as an accounting manager with no auditing experience. My GPA in school was barely good enough to graduate. I will say I did work full time and took 15hrs a semester. I did go back and get a master's in accounting in 91. I took the CPA exam back in 90/91 when you had to take all 4 parts at once over a 2 day period and the exam was offered twice a year in November and May. I did not study very much and made in the 40's on all four parts both times.

I started Becker in Sep 2012 and so far, REG = 82, AUD = 86, BEC = 88. I will take FAR in November and hopefully be done.

I cannot say if Becker is better than the other prep courses since I have not tried them but it has worked for me and I would recommend it. I know Becker is expensive and if my employer was not going to reimburse me once I pass, I would have probably gone with something cheaper.

    Reg - Passed 82 Nov 2012 - Becker
    Aud - Passed 86 May 2013 - Becker
    BEC - Passed 88 Aug 2013 - Becker
    FAR - Passed 88 Nov 2013 - Becker

Becker is great. Do exactly what the say, take your OWN NOTES (written, most important part) and do every single problem and you will pass. IMO.

I too think Becker is a great program

I never really tried all that much in college until my last year. My tax classes and intermediate accounting classes weren't my strongest points at all..

Using Becker I was able to get a 91 on Reg, and 89 on FAR studying for 2 months each.

I wouldn't worry about the numbers all that much, I would worry about the concepts that surround them.

I can tell you now that your REG exam isn't going to give you the option between the 7.5% or 10% AGI. They'll give you one or the other. And in case you do need to figure it out yourself on a SIM, just remember 10%…

Keep in mind Becker, Wiley, etc. have 4000+ multiple choice questions they have to continuously update.

I've been very happy with Becker so far. Passed my first two exams on my first try… Can't really ask for more.

But what is this about having info wrong for REG?? I haven't started studying REG yet, but does Becker at least make note of this in their updates? Are there any other big errors like this??

    FAR 7/3/13 - 82
    BEC 8/21/13 - 82
    AUD 10/2/13 - 92
    REG 12/3/13 - 88

    DONE!!!! CA Candidate
    Beat the 12/31/13 clock!

The 2013 Becker books came out in late 2012, so any tax changes made in Jan 2013 couldn't be reflected. They do have documents on their website listing any changes/updates.
