Is it possible with low grades?

So, I’ll be honest and say the my grades in accounting, except for the 100 level courses, were C ‘s and D’s. In my management and business law classes I did really well. In fact I had straight A’s in all of the management courses. Is it possible to still pass the CPA exam with grades Thu low in the actual accounting courses?

Why did you do poorly in the accounting classes? Did you try as hard as you did for the business classes or was the material just harder for you?

Of course it's possible – it's all dependent on how hard you study. Sounds like you might struggle with FAR more than anything, but if you have a strong memory of the management and business law stuff, that you help you a little on REG and BEC.

I have a degree in secondary education and went to night school while teaching to meet the education requirements, needed almost all Business and accounting classes. I earned mostly A's and B's in those classes. I did not begin studying for the exam until a year after I completed the education requirements due to a job. I retained some but not all by any stretch. I also know that I am very good at beating college classes as teachers have trends and formulas for their classes. I just passed AUD with an 81 after a 67 on the first try.

You can do it, the grades don't matter now. What matters is–did you struggle with understanding the concepts or just did not study enough. I use CPAexcel and have seen other “review” courses–they are exactly that REVIEW. They assume you have working knowledge of basic accounting. To help myself with some topics, I use my Principals and Intermediate textbooks. You may need to do the same, just know that the review courses do not really teach the material, so don't expect that. It will require extra effort, but you can do it.

    AUD: 67, 81 (NINJA MCQ's ONLY for 2nd Attempt)
    FAR: NOT GOOD, LARRY!
    REG: ??

@Tax lady the material I found to be harder and it wasn't nearly as interesting as I found the management courses to be. I wonder if I'm too far behind to make it through this. I've been trying to pass for 3 years and I've only tried Regulation, Audit and BEG. The first time I took Regulation I got 73, BEC 68 and Audit was 48 but I consider that more of a reconciliation mission.

My undergrad accounting gpa was 3.47 not including introductory accounting and look at my scores. It's all about how much time and work you put in it. You have to put in the hours, if you do you will pass if you don't you will fail.

    FAR 71,67,74

    REG 68,71,71

    FAR - 71, 68, 74, (8/31/14) 78 ✔
    REG - 67, 71, 71, (10/18/14) 78 ✔
    BEC - (11/29/14) 86 ✔
    AUD - 73, (4/4/15) 86 ✔

I can't believe this is over! 2 years and 3 months..

With the scores you have already received, even though not quite passing, I definitely think you can do this. My whole point in asking that question was did you put the effort in. I had classes in college that I didn't do my best at simply for the fact that I was an adult, working full time, and have kids. Sometimes studying just wasn't possible. Just because I made a lower grade in the class than some of my peers didn't mean I couldn't do it. Not finding a class (instructor) as interesting as some of your other classes doesn't qualify you for failure. You can certainly do this…but only if you truly WANT this. 🙂

I was thinking the same thing– if the low grades were due to low effort, that's one thing, but if it was due to not understanding the material (despite tons of effort), that's another thing.

You can put in little effort and pass with a C in school, but I'd say nearly everyone who passes the CPA exam had to put in a lot of effort to do it. So you will have to try really hard– get obsessed with it– and it can be done.

Low grades alone aren't a problem, it's whether they were due to a lack of effort or lack of intelligence (to use the politically incorrect term)?

That is a question only you can answer.

And even though you didn't ask, as far as getting a job… individual grades probably don't matter as much as overall grades, but some employers request transcripts and will see your horrible accounting grades.

I'm not worried about a job. I have one in upper management as I have had for the 10 years. I'm almost 40 years old an have been out of school for a very long time. The CPA was a hobby project. And it doesn't mean someone has a lack of intelligence because they can't/don't pass the CPA exam. There are plenty of intelligent people who have not passed this exam but are highly successful in other areas of business.

    Yes.

Get a good review course. Then work hard, put in the time, and bust your ass.

I'm learning the CPA exam is all about how much time you put in. It's not impossible material, just very extensive. So it takes a long time to retain all that information.

    Good luck bud.
