Is it weird to NOT be that terrified for FAR (my first ever CPA Exam)?

My test is May 11th and I’ve put in a TON of time studying. Completed all of the Wiley Program, studying 5-6 hrs on weekdays and more on weekends. My Ninja scores are below.

I’m by no means taking my foot off of the gas pedal, but I’m doing pretty well in framework, NFP, and governmental. I want to be very confident going in. But the amount of time I’ve put in, I’m not entirely worried. The next 1-1.5 weeks I will dedicate to getting Fin Statements and Specific Transactions down.

Am I being naive to the difficulty on test day, or am I doing alright?

When I took FAR back in 2010, I wasn't worried going in either. I wasn't worried after I came out either. I didn't really sit there and question whether I put the right answer or not and then start flipping through my book. I just waited it out. I ended up with a 75 but at that point, I was burned out. Took REG afterwards and failed because I didn't really study.

If you're going in without worry, that can mean you studied so much until you know you will do great or you are indifferent.

I think I've been doing well on the MCQ so I'm not worried as in “Oh crap will I even get through all of the material?” like I was a few weeks ago. I really do care. It's been a rollercoaster studying so I'm getting the feeling like “Okay, things are going right, am I about to get blindsided?” lol

My FAR/REG exams weren't THAT bad. BEC and AUD..even though I scored higher were brutal to me. Don't be terrified. Just go in and give the exam a t*ty twister.

I agree with the person that said you could be indifferent at this point because you may be burnt out. It's not horrible to not be worried, but with some of those 50-60% scores I wonder why you aren't worried just a little bit? Do you really feel like you know those sections or do you think the high scores you have in the other sections will make up for it? The reason I ask is because I had a similar attitude going into my first REG attempt and in hindsight I know that I didn't focus enough on my weak areas and they brought me down in the end. Pull up those scores in those weak areas.

@mamabear I'm going to try to get those bad sections to the 80s in the upcoming days, but I was just saying I have 3 sections (I know they're the lowest percentage to be shown on the test) that are high percentages. So I don't think I'm fearless going into it…just a little less scared because I'm doing okay in some parts instead of bombing everything.

I didn't know if people had similar experiences and felt comfortable going into the test or am I wrong to be less confident

I'd also be concerned that your low “Not answered correctly” and high scores are from memorizing the questions, and not truly understanding the material. You won't go in on test day and see the same questions, so make sure you really understand *why* each right answer is right, and why the others are wrong. That will help you more when you get to the real test than doing the same practice questions over and over. That false sense of security can be dangerous.

@Kimboroni I'd say a small portion were from memorization (I wanted to get it to zero so naturally some were memorized from doing them over and over). I try to bounce between Wiley TB and Ninja to mix it up and make sure I can do all sorts of problems, not just ones I've memorized.

You should be fearful of those scores. Understand questions when you get them wrong, but don't waste your time going over the same questions. Cover as many questions as you can and take the time to know why they are right and wrong. I spent my last week of each exam doing 600+ multiple choice questions….never retaking the same questions.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding Jeff's suggestion to get to the review stage and have 85% trending? Not being cynical, just wondering. I didn't just do the easy questions over and over

I didn't reach the review stage and I didn't have 85% trending score in all topics, but I did go through every question at least once and some problem questions twice. Always choose the option for questions never seen and get through them all. It's fine to go back and repeat some questions as long as you aren't drilling the same ones over and over and over.

@MamaBear that's exactly what I'm doing. I want to make sure I at least see every single problem. I usually print out really wordy/tricky ones and review them later. Like I said before, there have definitely been times where I did the problem multiple times so I recognized the answer. I'll check the answer off, but make sure to run through the problem and understand the equation

When I took FAR I was extremely nervous because I took it last and knew it would be the toughest for me since I had already been in tax and had no interest in the auditing/financial reporting side. I prepped by doing over 2000 MCQs and invested less time with the sims since I knew I could learn concepts more easily with the MCQs. Two weeks before the exam I felt really comfortable and slowed down a lot because I didn't want to burn out. It was also the only exam that the morning of I actually went out to breakfast to try to relax myself since I get really bad anxiety before big exams. Came out feeling I failed and ended up passing with a high score. I think as long as you have covered the broad topics and can identify those within specific exam questions, you can pass. I am definitely a person who can memorize things very easily but with this exam I think it's important to understand the concepts and memorize the detail below the concept.

Agreed, understanding the concepts is very important. It's funny how everyone who thinks they fail actually pass.
