Is there at least one state that does not require 150 Credits to get licensed?

I have been working in private Accounting for the last 10 years. Even if I wanted to get in public Accounting, I cant because I wouldn’t take a pay cut, and I dont think they would hire someone with 10 years of private accounting knowledge. The reason why I want to become a CPA is so that I cant break the 75K barrier here in South Florida. I have spoken to many recruiters and they all tell me the same thing, which is that I dont need to be licensed here in South Florida to be able to get at least 85K. They only want me to be a licensed CPA in any sate. I’m currently under Colorado, but I dont think I will be able to pass all 4 parts by July 1, 2015, which is when the 150 Hr rule will kick in that state. There is no point on spending more money to get my 150 Credits if recruiters do not care if I’m licensed in Florida as long as I don’t try to get into public Accounting. If any of you is in a similar situation, and you found your answer, please let me know. I have researched all the states on the Becker site and only Colorado shows as a match, but as I said before, the rules will change soon.

I think I found my answer. If anyone is in a similar situation, you are welcome to check the site below. It seems that Guam does not require 150 hrs, and is part of NASBA. I know is easier to get a Muslim to go to the movies with a Jew than to get an accountant to help you find a loophole, but it seems that Guam could be the answer.

    Hi Martin,

I was in a similar situation with state board of New Hampshire, starting off the exam journey with only 129 credits. And I was also in a race against time as NH changed their rules to require 150 credits for all starting July 2014. Although I finished the exams before that ( in April 2014) ,when it came to applying for license finally I summed up hours and months in public practice and I was 2 months short of the required 24 months of public practice to be able to get licensed with the 120 credit rule. I then tried to get licensed in Colorado as they only needed 1 yr of experience, but being in Canada I didn't have a CPA supervisor, so that plan didn't work as well. So finally, I decided to get the remaining 21 credits, which I completed in less than 2 months and by spending less than 1000 dollars. And after that I was eligible to get licensed in a lot more states than just NH. And now I am CPA in Washington state 🙂 So let me ask you this, how many credits are you short of for 150? May be I can help you get it in no time and in a very inexpensive way.

    Cheers!

    John

    Hi Martin,

I got your email, but since there are more people interested in the topic I will elaborate here. This has already been discussed in the forum before, but I I will just summarize here. There are a couple programs namely CLEP and DSST, which offer challenge exams for lots of courses. Each clep exams are $80 each and DSST exams are $70 after coupon WEBTENOFF. Each clep exam that you pass can award you from 3 to 12 credits. And each DSST exams can award you 3 credits on passing.

Unfortunately the transcripts directly provided by DSST or CLEP are not accepted by the board on its own, and the board wanted it to be on a college or university transcript. You can easily get this done at either of these two: excelsior college or Thomas Edison state college. I went with Thomas Edison state college. They charged me a flat one time fee of $500 to transcribe my clep and DSST credits. The service is call credit banking. Then I challenged the following exams: Clep Analyzing and interpreting literature (6 credits) – zero study, Clep Principles of Management ( 3 credits) – 2 hours of study, DSST – Money and Banking(3credits) – zero study, DSST- principles of supervision (3credits)(zero study), DSST into to business (3 credits)-zero study, and DSST personal finance (3credits) zero study. All the exams are multiple choice and duration is about 2 hours. I was done all of them in 1 hour or less for each, and passed on my first try mostly through common sense and process of elimination and guessing. It wouldnt have even taken two months if I didn't live in canada and had to travel to US to write the exam every time.

This was definitely the shortest, easiest and the most inexpensive way to get my 21 credits. There are some language courses that even over up to 12 credits for 1 exam! So look into it and let me know if it helped you.

Good Luck and let me know if you have more questions.

    Best,

    John
