Is This True?

My coworker just told me that the Big 4 is having a hard time hiring graduates right out of school because the PCAOB is requiring a lot of “ticking and tying” and the new hires think the job would be too boring. I almost told him he was full of it but decided against it- true, not true?

I chose not to seek a public accounting auditing job for this very reason, because ticking and tying my life away didn't sound fun (even though I loved auditing classes and would've enjoyed the higher level auditing I think), but I think there's still loads of recent grads eager for Big 4.

I definitely skipped out on public intentionally, but the rest of my graduating class was fighting each other for interviews. This was 2010, a bad year to graduate.

It seems to me like 80% of grads want to go into public accounting and the other 20% don't. But obviously you're going to be ticking & tying as a staff, regardless of the PCAOB becoming more stringent. I thought it was an odd comment because when you're hired out of college, especially right now, most students are happy to just get a job, even if it is boring!

There are new hires crawling over each other to get a job here. If anything, ticking and tying should be awesome for them because it's a great way to learn the papers and workflow without being given a giant responsibility. Once you're no longer a staff, you'll miss the days when all you had to do was tick.

I'm with amanda, these kids are mostly happy to have a job, I was! Start fighting and scratching for another job after a year or 2.

People at my school (I just graduated) were very slanted toward big 4. I'd say just about anyone that got a big 4 offer took it, a few people were only interested in industry, and some people, for whatever reason, didn't get big 4 so they went with regional/local. I think virtually everyone that took the big 4 offer would've taken it even if the only job responsibility for the first year was sorting an industrial sized container of M&Ms by color. It's the long-term benefits that people are interested in.

Not a chance. Big 4 experience is still well sought by industry. I'm in a special service line with financial clients, and I'm looking to transfer to industry (financial clients) after MBA from T25 in about 5 years or so.

Big 4 is exactly what I wanted since my school wasn't a target-finance school.

I know that after speaking to a Big 4 recruiter that they have more jobs than they have people, not to mention the turnover rate being ridiculously high. They definitely have a problem with staffing but they still maintain their high standards of only hiring the most personable people with the least red flags…

Conclusion: they'll never be fully staffed and that's why new hires and seniors will always work like dogs.

We had right at 2000 new hires training for Fall. Yes, we are having a horrible time of finding people

    Bec-76 (7/14)
    Aud-81 (8/14)
    Reg-82 (7/15)
    Far- 82 (10/15)

Moral of the story, don't do your CPA while working in Big 4 Public Accounting.

@acome…. It's ironic isn't it? But everyone they hire is tainted, but the least tainted people they could find. Haha.
