I was under the impression that you can put your “CPA” after your name as your title after you pass all four sections. I read a post on this forum that suggests you have to be licensed first?

You have to be licensed before you can add CPA after your name. Simply passing the cpa exams do not qualify you to be a CPA. You still have to meet your all of your state requirements. A requirement of your state for the CPA designation is to pass the tests, but most states also require some sort of experience in the industry along with an ethics exam.

Yeah – you have to be licensed in your state and it's a good idea to put which state you're licensed in as well.

Putting CPA after your name just because you passed the exam is a big no-no.

I heard you just had to pay the NASBA fees to use the designation?

SOB! I figured that there had to be something I was missing. So how do you use the fact that you've passed the exam on your resume if you intend not to ever be licensed? Do you just write it in your significant accomplishments as “Passed the CPA Exam”? That sounds messed up.

I heard all you have to do is think about taking the exam and then, bam, instant three letters after your name.

Sorry, Spur. I was having too much fun. These 12 hour days are rocking my sh1t.

Under my resume I just have “successfully passed cpa exam” or something like that.

Cool thanks! Sometimes this late at night I'm just too lazy to google stuff and rather get answers from people.

Yeah, you need to be licensed. It says so in my Congratulatory letter. Simply passing all 4 parts doesn't give you the right to put CPA after your name. You gotta meet all the requirements…. education, exam, work experience, and ethics exam (if applicable).

Why not just get licensed? If you've passed the exam you've done the hardest part. My cousin got licensed to leverage into a finance career. He has never attended a single CPE course.

Now I have no doubt that I will have to get licensed. I just have to figure out if I can get someone in my office to sign off on my experience. My biggest motivator in taking this exam are those three little letters after your name. I guess its almost like a status symbol that I try to imagine being in my email signature.

As a follow up, once you are licensed is it appropriate to put your name, CPA in your email signature?

as for the email signature, it depends.

I am an accounting manager for a manufacturing company. I do not use my CPA designation because while it was a requirement for my job, its not really relevant to anybody else but the owner of the company. I often have to email vendors and customers, and frankly they couldn't care less whether I am a CPA an MD or a JD. I don't have it in my business cards, either.
