I have family who lives in Bermuda, and they always tell me the Big 4 are always advertising for CPAs. Anyone ever work there or know someone who has? What positions are mainly offered? Hows work/life balance? I visit a few times a year, so I know the Cost of Living is very high, I know other people that work in other fields that have relatively higher pay then they would receive in the US, presumably b/c COL is high is this true for CPAs as well?

Bermudian here living and working at a Big 4 in Bermuda 🙂

If you plan to come into a Big 4 here you will either come in as a Senior or an Experienced Staff/Associate depending on whether you are qualified or not. They will hire you if your exams are passed but you are still waiting to fulfill the experience requirement.

Work life balance depends on the culture of the Big 4. Some are big on it some not so much, but I would assume we are not as hard on employees as a US Big 4.

CPA salaries vary depending on where you work, but we don't have income taxes so I would also assume that no matter where you work your take home salary will be better.

One of my good friends from college actually got an offer from one of the Big 4 in Bermuda. He does auditing for them.

He says that the mentality there is very different than us in the Northeast US. He couldn't really describe it better than that.

They fly him back to the US for CPA exams but he said they don't seem to really care about CPA credentials. They weren't too eager about helping him pay for the exams either.

His salary was on the lower end of our graduating class even with the high COL there. He works a lot of hours, including weekends.

All in all, I don't think he really cares for it but he loves the island so he puts up with it.

Thank you both for your input. @mimi86 Do the Big 4 firms offer housing for employees, or do you have to pay your own. If your own? What are the rent rates like?

@mhueycpa Big 4 doesn't provide housing or a stipend for housing. I can speak for the one I work for which covers initial relocation costs idk the others policy on this. Rents are high which is one of the reasons our COL is so high. Most new hires will maybe rent in a group of two-four so that they can split the costs and get a really nice place.
