I have an interview Friday at a mid-sized national firm. I plan to dress professional, but wanted your take on what you feel are the dos and don’ts of interview attire. Like, skirt or pants, heels or flats, etc.
Oh, and what type of hair style?
Also, is it tacky to bring a purse … like a full-size purse?
Here is just a general inquiry … Should I bring a leather portfolio type binder with copies of my resume, references list, etc.? Is it ok to bring a list of questions you want to ask?
I am going to try to finish up a chapter of REG and then go shopping tonight!
Any help appreciated!

I always wear a skirt suit. My skirt hits a little below the knees so I am comfortable in it and its not too short. My hair is usually in a pony tail. I have seen people with their hair down as well. I have a big purse that fits my leather binder in it. I dont like carrying the binder alone so I stick it in my purse and then take that out when I am seated.
Good luck!

May 4, 2015 at 4:53 pm #664055y_u_no_passParticipantI always have my purse with me- except at interviews. I purchased a portfolio for that purpose with copies of my resume and notes and just bring that in with me. You should wear a suit and I think heels or flats are fine as long as they are well polished and professional looking. The suit can be a pantsuit or a skirt one whichever you prefer. Then a collared shirt which is a lighter color than the suit. Makeup should be professional, light, but not nonexistent. I googled this as I tend to wear either virtually none, or a lot of makeup. Finally, if you wear a skirt you should probably wear nylons. You can sometimes skip this if you are in a warm market like Florida or California.
Oh and for your hair you should wear it back in a bun or similar professional style.

Don't go overboard on jewelry or makeup. I recommend something effortless for hair that will not need to be fixed part-way through to maintain the look. I would recommend not bringing a large purse, a briefcase style bag would be ideal with some sort of folder for resume and reference copies to hand-out for extra interviewers that may not have them, as well as to take anything they give you like business cards.
As for questions, definitely have some in-mind and writing them down is good as it shows preparation, also have a pen so you can take note of answers or additional questions you have when you are interviewing. The interview should be a dialogue. You can also take notes of things you achieved or whatever in-case you forget what you were going to say.

Do not let your hair fall on your face (try to pull up your hair or something). Do not show too much legs and do not show cleavage.
Purse is fine. Wear heels (not very high heels, but be reasonable and closed toed). Also, do not wear too much perfume (I would recommend not wearing perfume at all- you do not want to cause them to get allergic or something). Just shower and that should be fine.

I wish I was better with styling my hair in up-dos! I will have to try to figure something out.
@Thrawn – I am glad a guy jumped in because what a guy thinks is appropriate and what a girl thinks looks good can be very different! lol

My staple jewelry is pearl earrings. I think they look classy. Make up should be minimal – a little blush, mascara/eye liner and you are done. NAILS – men/women, no one likes nails with peeled off nail polish. Either keep them fully polished or natural.
I am not a fan of heels but I do believe a little heel makes things look better on a special occasion. So I carry my heels in my large purse and put them on just outside the office building.
GOOD LUCK!
May 4, 2015 at 9:41 pm #664062MaLoTuParticipantSkynet- there are times when the Princess Leia do would be appropriate, but an interview isn't one of them! Lol
Howmany- I always wear comfy shoes and keep my heels in my bag! I have to take BART which is a train-like system in the SF Bay Area.. So I have to walk.
I will look in YouTube and Pinterest for hairstyles. Thanks for the suggestions, again, everyone.

I think either is fine, just a matter of which you will feel more confident in (which in turn determines which you'll look more confidant in). I usually wear heels with my suit, but it's about the only time I wear them, since my feet always complain for a week afterwards. 😐
Hair, I wouldn't say it has to be all up (all up looks better on some faces than others – mine is face that does better without the hair pulled off sharply), but you want it to look professional and most importantly not require any touching, adjusting, etc. For me, a variation on the classic half-up do has worked best. I leave the first inch or so of my hair down (side-parted) and tucked behind my ears, then do the rest of the top half of my hair pulled back into a barrette. Keeps some softness around my face and keeps my hair out of the way. Some people can leave their hair completely down, brushed smooth, and never touch it. I interviewed someone last week that was like that. It looked professional, neat, etc., and didn't “interrupt” the interview. However, when my hair is down, it looks messy very quickly and falls in my way so I can't ignore it. So, for her it worked; for me it wouldn't. Personally I'd avoid the plain pony tail, since I think it can look more athletic/casual, unless it's done right…and I don't have the skill to do it “right” or even know what makes it “right”, just know some people can pull it off but it's far from everyone.
I usually have carried my purse and have seen purses carried, but would advise towards a professional purse. This isn't the time for Minnie's Backpack, but something solid/mature/professional is fine IMHO. I do have a portfolio I carry too with resume copies in it – next time, I might try just bringing that (with perhaps my Driver's License in it) and my keys instead of the purse. Something to consider at least…
May 4, 2015 at 10:51 pm #664064MaLoTuParticipantLilla- I don't really care for the tight, pulled back hair look on myself either. I am going to mess around with my hair this week and see what might work.
My biggest challenge is keeping my hair looking the way i styled it! It seems like an hour later it is all flat and crazy! Lol

In all seriousness you can always ask a hairstylist for their opinion (my gf is a hairstylist). If you tell me your length, type of hair, and ethnicity I can ask my gf but obviously it's best to go to someone in person that you trust.
Also, professional recruiting sites and University websites may prove to be a resourceful source. You may also see random linked profiles to get ideas.

May 5, 2015 at 2:57 am #664066OlintoJrParticipantListen… Just look professional. No interviewer gives a rats a** about the specifics of what you bring/ what style your hair is in. You are distracting yourself from the important part of the interview (knowing what message you want to convey inside and out) and you are also added unnecessary stress.
I used to be in your shoes.. And bombed many of my first interviews because I was overthinking things ( like should I open my portfolio and take notes/ is it okay to have a list of questions etc.) I went through a handful of interviews this past week and received offers from all within the hour. What did I do differently? I stopped stressing the little things.. I prepared for what mattered… I went in and owned the place.
You landed an interview because you ARE qualified…. Now go in and show them whose boss.

May 5, 2015 at 3:59 am #664067MaLoTuParticipant@Allergic – I have long layered medium course hair …. I think I am just going to pull it back in a loose bun =-/ Oh, and they didn't give me any information on who I was interviewing with, I just know it said interviews – plural.
@Olinto – Totally understand! I am focusing on the interview part, as well. I have already interviewed twice with them. Now I am going to interview several more times (the interview is for 2.5 hours). I know that this stuff is arbitrary (in the grand scheme), but I will feel much better if I am dressed 100% appropriately! I will try not to stress too much!

May 5, 2015 at 4:45 am #664068Allergic2CPAParticipantOption 1: Wash the night before the interview, use heat rollers that are 1 or 1.5 inches on the top half of your hair in the morning and then curl the bottom part.
Option 2: Curl the hair the night before and the wrap it in a bun and it should give you a lot of volume and curls/waves In the morning.
