Anyone else out there decide this is there last busy season? Mine hasn’t been that bad but I’ve reached the point where I just can’t do another one and I’m looking to move on from public.

It happens. I thought this would be my last. Turns out last year was my last. Good luck in moving forward in your career!

    AUD - July 2014 - 76
    REG - August 2014 - 82
    FAR - November 2014 - 78
    BEC - January 2015 - 81

    DONE!!!!

Used Becker online. Who needs a text when you can burn your eyes out staring at the screen for months on end?

"Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It is a very mean and nasty place and it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't how hard you're hit; it's about how hard you can get hit, and keep moving forward. How much you can take, and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done!"

I'm thinking it will be my last I hate feeling like I absolutely can't do anything for 3 months out of the year. I'm looking to get out of accounting altogether. The only thing I really liked was getting to bank a bunch of time off but then I feel so stressed that I need to take if off just to stay sane. And then I end up having to move my PTO around to suit my workload which pisses me off.

Plenty of my friends don't work nearly as much as I do and make the same or more and are mostly stress free. Then I look at the partners basically working every day for 2 months and doing returns at home and I don't want that life, that isn't something I want for myself.

I can't see myself leaving anytime soon. I see what people do in industry, at least at the senior accountant level, and it seems very boring. Then there is the “financial analyst”,which seems even worse.

    Then again,

Being a partner is a horrific job, and I don't understand the appeal of that at all.

    The pro's of public are:

    Everyday is different.

Working with different teams all the time is good.

While there are a lot of stupid, lazy idiots in Public, there are still a lot smart people balance it out.

    The Cons are:

    long hours

    crap pay.

    The pro's of industry are:

    Good Pay

Better hours but still long hours.

    The cons are:

Working under the legions of tyrannical matriarchs who lead every account dept in every company.

Enduring the unbearable cat fights between the Matriarchs and the drama queen staff/senior accountants.

    The jobs are freaking boring.

You do the same thing everyday.

You work with the same people everyday.

People in industry are inefficient and lazy.

There is no room for advancement

You are still working your ass off to make other people money.

Looks like industry is the worst gig. I'd rather strike out on my own and start my own firm, or go for the partnership. There is no other option for me at this point.

My suggestion to anyone will be not to quit until you have at least 3 years under your belt (2 years as a staff and 1 year as a senior).

@ceesmitty116 – I just put in my resignation letter Friday effective immediately and quit. There are just too many options out there in accounting to feel miserable everyday. You spend so much of your waking hours at work that you need to be truly happy otherwise it'll take a toll on your health.

Sometimes you just have to try it out and find out early on that its not your cup of tea!

I have been out of Big4 FS for about 2 two weeks now. I was a first year associate, went through a hellish busy season with countless 12am+ nights and working 7 day weeks. I thought I saw a light at the end of the busy season tunnel at the close of March. They had other ideas though. I was rolled on to another busy season client right afterwards(so much for any appreciation of my time and effort). a few weeks later I put in my notice and now I love my new job. At the risk of sounding vengeful and somewhat immature, screw management and the firm. They dont know how to keep and retain good workers let alone treat people like human beings.

I quit public last March and don't regret it. I get paid a lot more and expect to be promoted to senior soon in industry (to those saying it wouldn't happen if I left before senior in public, suck it – that is a myth perpetuated by Firm partners and managers trying to get their staff to stay – good people will grow in their careers regardless, it is only the incompetent public accountants that need to stay as they would only have a chance at institutions that promote based on tenure rather than ability). The first couple of days of close each month can have longer hours (sometimes staying as late as 7:30 but sometimes leaving around 5:30). Decembers can be rough but still have never worked past 9:30 and no weekends required. Except for the above times, work is usually a 8:30-9am to 5-5:30pm affair. And my parking is paid for, my bus paid for and I actually get a decent 401k match. Relative to public, I'm in heaven. And I get 4 weeks of PTO.

I Couldn't agree more with the above post, specifically, “(to those saying it wouldn't happen if I left before senior in public, suck it – that is a myth perpetuated by Firm partners and managers trying to get their staff to stay – good people will grow in their careers regardless, it is only the incompetent public accountants that need to stay as they would only have a chance at institutions that promote based on tenure rather than ability).”

I decided to deviate from accounting all together, but remain in FS sector. Not only was offered a bump of around 15% of the garbage I was being paid, but I also have a normal work schedule, pto, and more interesting work, but also the gratification of not having to work for such fake and dishonest management. I almost feel sad for all of the associates who are so wrapped up in the brainwashing facade brought on by people who couldn't care less about them.

Spock I would love to hear what you branched into, I have a BS in risk management and finance and am wondering how to get the experience I need in public and be able to be more in the FS field after.

    FAR: 78*, 75
    REG: 76*, 85
    BEC: 79*, 76
    AUD: 79*, 93

All scores expired, let's try this again.

    FAR - 78*
    AUD - 66, 79
    REG - 73, 76
    BEC - 79

I got into a position as an analyst on a commodities trading desk. I think this type of transition is probably more the exception than the rule, but I made a point to build connections throughout university and when I needed them they were there to help. More than anything it is important to interview well and have a good reason behind getting the hell out of accounting. The topic came up in every interview I took on.
