I’m a recent graduate of Virginia Tech’s accounting program, and have started studying to knock out the CPA. I’m a Maryland resident and logged onto the Maryland Board of Accountancy’s website in order to apply for the exam. However, I’m noticing that they have a three credit requirement for a course that is devoted entirely to the study of ethics. At VT, there weren’t any requirements for a course specifically devoted to ethics, we were just taught it pretty much in every business course throughout the four years.

Obviously, the Board is taking an exceptionally long time to get back to me, so I’m reaching out to the community for answers.

I’ve noticed that Virginia does not have this same three credit ethics course requirement, so I’m thinking of applying there instead. Are there any downsides to doing this, although I’m a MD resident and will be doing most of my work here? I’d rather just sign up in VA if it doesn’t force me to go back to get three credits of ethics when I’m sure there will be plenty of continuing education on the topic in my future, regardless.

If you do end up taking the ethics course I took an ethics class from UMUC — it was a 6 week (if I recall correctly) online class, $1,500 for it. Easiest class I ever took… There were 2 papers, and forum discussions. You paced yourself on your readings.

I know VA and MD has reciprocity, not sure if that's something applied for automatically granted, though.
