Hello everyone,

I just finished my long CPA journey by passing FAR this window. I have a question about work experience.

I sat in a different state (Vermont) and seeking licensure in my work state (Florida). I did a 3 internship in January 2014 and have been working full time since January 2015.

In the Florida requirements it states “However, requirements to sit for the exam must be met before work experience commences”

Since I met the requirements to sit where I took all 4 parts, does anyone know if my internship time can be applied to the being licensed in Florida?

I think your best bet would be to contact the Florida State Board.

Your best bet would be to call or email the FL State CPA Board and ask them, since this can vary from state to state. In some really strict states, the Board won't even accept exam scores from another state unless you met the requirements in that state at the time you sat but I think that's only one or two and I haven't heard that about FL.

However, from reading your post, it sounds like you are wondering if your experience from before you were in FL/before you applied to the FL board would count. If you met the educational or other requirements to sit for the exam prior to the internship, I would expect it would count, regardless of whether you were in FL or had applied with the FL board. It's not saying it has to be after you passed the exams, just after you met the requirements to take them. So, let's say you worked full-time in accounting while getting your Bachelor's degree. Since the Bachelor's degree is required to sit for the exam, your experience in school wouldn't count. However, if you then worked for 15 years after you met the education requirements before you sat for the exam, those 15 years would count for your experience.

That's my interpretation based on seeing other state's evaluation criteria, but your best bet would be to call or email the FL board and verify.
