Looking for a new job…

I’m recent CPA getter and over the past month or so I decided that it’s time for a job change. I have been with my current company (in industry) for almost 4 years but I need a change of scenery and new opportunity. I have a freshly updated resume that I have started to send out to companies in my area. I’m looking to go the corporate accounting route. The last time I sought employment I was a college grad and it suuucked. I figured it may be a little bit easier to land a job now because I have experience and CPA designation. So far, i haven’t had much luck. I live near a large metro area so there are a lot of corporations and opportunities. I imagine these places get bombarded with resumes that aren’t much different from my own. Seems as though I’ll need to start networking more as sending resume after resume does not seem very efficient. For those of you that have switched careers mid-level how did you do it? Networking? Submit resumes to random companies until you find something?

I just wanted to say that I really like your signature quote. Where did you find it? It's so true.

I'd like to add to the OP's question. How do you supply references when you are still employed and don't want to jeopardize your current employment?

I've had really good results using recruiting firms. I'm a financial analyst (fancy name for an accountant) at an insurance carrier and we use recruiters to fill the majority of our positions. If you live near a large metro area, I would think there would be at least a few recruitment firms. I find it easier since they will negotiate salary, vacation and other issues for you. I connected with a few on LinkedIn and they regularly reach out to me with positions they are trying to fill. I hope this helps!

In terms of references when I was looking to leave Big 4 each time I interviewed and they asked for references I always told them that they can contact them after I had received an offer. That way by the time they called I already had the job. Employers understand that you dont want your current employer to know and make things awkward for you.
