Looking For Job Out Of State

    I’m looking for a job out of state, but I recognize the challenges of doing such a thing. However, my wife and I already own a house in the state where I’m looking. Further, I’m not tied down with a job in the state where I currently reside and can relocate to the new state in a matter of days and one my own dime.

    What is the best way to call this out in both my resume and cover letter? Can I place my out-of-state address in my resume and cover letter without being deceptive? I currently have my primary out-of-state address in the header of my resume and cover letter.

    Would love to hear from anyone who makes hiring decisions.

    How close is the state? Is it an easy drive if you are called up for an interview with not much notice?

    My wife and I moved across the country last year. I was in touch with a recruiter before the move but once I was actually in the state I had a job within a week.

    @Euro. It's not close. Is about 2,000 miles away. However I could fly out there overnight for an interview, and if hired I could pack the car up with my stuff and drive out there in a weekend. My wife would stay behind at our primary address until she is able to find work in the new state since her future employer would likely be able to pay for her relocation expenses.

    When I interviewed 2 years ago when my husband and I were planning on moving I remember interviewing with company. After my face to face interview I got the sense that the hiring manager did not want to take the hit for the moving expenses. I expressed this multiple times to the HR person that I would pay my own way. But the HR person told me that it was company policy to pay for the relocation if I were to get offered the job. I did not get the job. One of my friends worked there.

    Some companies dont offer relocation and for those I told them up front I was fine paying for my own move.

    Maybe add a note on your resume at the bottom that relocation expenses not needed or something like that. If that is kosher.

    I would list the home you own that is in the state you are moving to on your resume. If you get called for an interview, schedule your flight. You don't even need to disclose it to them.

    I moved from IN to MA on my own dime after my bf moved out here for his job. I expressed that I didn't need relocation assistance as I'd be moving in with my boyfriend, and I all needed was 3 weeks before my start date so I could give 2 weeks at my job and take 1 week to drive out here. I had 4 face-to-face interviews in the fall of 2015 that I flew out for but I could tell it was a choice of “do we hire the local candidate or someone who doesn't live here?”

    I think one way would be to schedule some time to go to your location and in the cover letter/phone screens say “I am going to be in the area these days, could we set something up?” That worked very well for me because I was coming out over Labor Day weekend (the Fri before and Tues after) and then again at the end of September. This showed them I was serious about moving there, had ties to the area, and they didn't have to offer or even pay for my flight.

    I also removed my old address and put on my resume “RELOCATING TO 123 Green St”

    In December 2015 I quit my job and moved to MA on my own, without a job lined up. It took me 3 weeks to find something which is going pretty well so far.

    I think I'm going to give the ‘Relocating To' idea a go. My wife thinks I should just go right out there though. Sometimes I think she is trying to get rid of me for awhile. 😉

    In Nov. we decided I would just move so I actually updated it to “RELOCATING ON JAN 1ST TO”

    After I did move, I changed it from “RELOCATING TO” to “RECENTLY RELOCATED TO” so it didn't look deceiving that I had all these jobs in Indiana and none in Massachusetts.

    I made it all caps and bold right above my address to make it clear.
