In a better instructor match, who ya got?!

I’m going with Olinto all the way. While both are very intelligent and know their stuff, I think Olinto brings more to the table to help with the exam. Gearty will tell you little things here and there and have you re-write the same thing over and over to drive home a point. It works. It drives home the point. The problem is that it often doesn’t really help me. I’ll remember it, but I’ll never use it to help me with any questions. For example, in REG, I can’t tell you how many times Gearty used the “Non-taxable, None, NBV” thing to refer to an event being non-taxable and having no income if you use the net book value as the basis. He said to remember the three N’s. For whatever reason, I never once actually thought of that or applied that when doing any questions. I really honestly don’t even know the relevance. If you use an item’s NBV as its basis it’s never taxable??? I don’t even know. I never really even thought about it.

Don’t get me wrong, I think Gearty is a good instructor; just slightly below Olinto.

Both are great and I wouldn’t have passed the two exams I did (and hopefully the third today) without them. Gearty carried me through AUD and I thought he was great. I also thought he was great for REG especially for corporate taxes, where I generally struggled.

But with Olinto, one way or another, I’ll be working the practice questions and for at least one or two, I’ll be struggling with the answer and think back to a little sidenote mentioned. Perhaps Olinto looks at the practice questions and incorporates in what the lecture didn’t cover? Maybe Gearty doesn’t? Who knows?

Both are my best friends and have been since I started the CPA. I will gladly send them both $1.00 if I pass all four on the first try!

I agree that Olinto is better. He goes into a lot more detail and which helps me recall back to his lectures to remember a point. But either way I ultimately don't really care if I learn it enough to pass!

Gearty for me. Olinto keeps you interested but I feel like he wanted me to memorize everything. Gearty is your stereotypical accountant but I hated my life much less after his lectures than Olintos.

And if I ever see Olinto I am holding him to that cup of coffee he promised me during law.

Gearty here also… but, i think its because he reminds me of my intermediate accounting teacher who i learned well from… something bothers me about olinto but i cant quite figure out what it is… maybe because he's too peppy while i'm wanting to bash my head into a wall (sick of studying!!).

I think my name speaks for itelf. Peter Olinto all the way. He makes the hard concepts easy to understand. AND, he throws around hundreds, swares, and once tackled P. Diddy in a football game. NO CONTEST.

    BEC - 73, 73, 79
    REG - 72, 75
    AUD - 72, 68, 82

I was a big Gearty fan. A lesson by Gearty is like watching an entertaing rated G movie. A lecture by Olinto is like watching an entertaining rated PG movie. Both are entertaining, but one is slightly more brash than the other.

I like Gearty better for FAR. Olinto is good when it comes to theory, but I get calcuations explained by Gearty better. I liked Mike guy (IT & Econ) a lot for BEC, I could literally remember everything he said even though he sounds boring at first.

I would have to say Gearty. Something about Olinto's way of speaking/lecturing would drive me crazy. I was always frustrated when he sometimes had you highlight, sometimes underline, sometimes circle for emphasis. Keep it consistent!!!

@ big shot cpa: I actually really liked the IT & Econ guy too. He was a little dry and boring, but he didn't mess around and I felt like his lectures went faster than others. He seemed to give the appropriate amount of time to take notes/highlight/etc. One of my biggest gripes with Becker is the lectures tell you to highlight or write something and then they zoom onto the next subject.
